Overview

Scott Harrington is a beguiling slave who becomes emancipated by law at the age of 17. He discovers the absolute truth when the law fails to deliver the freedom he envisioned. Long after the abolishment of slavery, Scott and his brother, Walter, remain embroiled in a love/hate relationship with the Seamore family. They are not only the human chattels of James Seamore but are also his biological sons. Scott's life is a clash between slavery and freedom, love and hate, Christianity, and the dark world of taboo practices. There are those who hate and fear him. Yet there are those who are willing to do anything to love and be loved by him, especially the femme fatale who resorts to witchcraft and plotting murder. When his life ends in 1939 at the age of 93, Scott still has a relationship with the family who owned him. In death he delivers a devastating blow to the family who loved him despite the vestiges of slavery he forced upon them. Love him or hate him -- you will never forget this unconventional leading man.
