This was a riveting, fast-paced thriller that will delight sci-fi and dystopian fans alike. With complex characters, a fascinating world, and terrifying robotic creatures, there was no end to the action and adventure. I was first introduced to Howard with her Aquarathi series, and I have been a fan ever since. Unfortunately, I haven’t read The Almost Girl, yet but that didn’t stop me from loving every second of this story. Howard gives enough backstory so that I wasn't completely in the dark about Riven and the events that led up to this book, and I am quite excited to dive into the first book to see it all play out. Although this story is fiction, it is quite interesting but also scary to think that perhaps in the near future we could be facing a world filled with cyborgs, and if this series is anything to go by, it's going to be horrific but also so amazing. Riven is a kickass character who is equally rebellious as she is loyal. Not only did she have to deal with the destruction of her world, but also her heart, as Caden had to do what was right for his people. I loved seeing her in action. She was a warrior - a real force to be reckoned with, but she also had heart, and stood up for everything she believed in. This book was perfect in every way, playing out like a movie in my head as I read it. It enthralled me to no end, with its intensity, intrigue and emotion. A spectacular read!
Ah, here is the problem with signing up to review this book. One, I should have done more research and realized that this book was not the first in the series. Not to say that I didn't enjoy the book but it was exactly a rave considering I had no idea what the hell was going on and I just jumped right into things. This book included a fast plot that was well-developed right along with the characters. Can you read this as a stand-alone? Probably not considering that it is a continuation of the first. If anything, this book reminded me a lot of Rescued by Tordin minus the hot aliens rescuing the human women. But hey, very similar plots. I can easily rate this a 3.5 and most likely, it will be treated higher once I get the first book into my hands. Blog you later, awesome book nerds.
Caden is the king of Neospes. His kingdom is under threat of being attacked by reptiles whose behaviour is not their norm. Being short of man power, he has to find a way to save his kingdom from being overthrown by the enemy. Riven is cyborg general. Her priority is to protect the king. She is being pursued by the enemy who will do anything to have her on their side. Caden and Riven are in love with each other but saving their people is what matters most. Caden has made a deal with Avaria, another kingdom. This alliance will give them the help they require but it also means that there is no future for Caden and Riven! As much as it hurts, Riven is resigned to being a soldier and protector first and foremost. They put a team together to undertake this dangerous journey. It's full of perils. When they eventually reach their destination, they are surprised at the Avarian's way of life. So different to their own. They discover that there is a traitor amongst the midst on their return to Neospes. It comes as no surprise to find out who this traitor is. This story is full of scientific and technical developments. These are innovative and well described. It's a little slow to begin with but then everything starts happening at a faster pace. It's full of action, suspense and romance. I like Riven's dedication to her king and country. Caden is willing to make sacrifices to save his kingdom. There are many twists and turns throughout. Knowing who to trust becomes difficult as some of the allies are out to get something for themselves. It also has a beautiful ending. I found the whole thing fascinating. This book would appeal to scifi fans and tech geeks. I received a complimentary ecopy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
