This new addition to the repertoire of nursing theory books sets forth a conceptual framework that melds family theory, nursing theory, and crisis theory. The author describes the framework of systematic organization as both a grand and a middle-range theory. The book has five parts. Part 1 describes the framework in detail. Part 2 addresses factors that influence family processes and issues involved with family research. Parts 3 through 5 focus on various types of family crises: those that arise from within the family system, those that relate to illness, and those that are attributable to environmental influences. Research implications of the framework are also addressed. The purpose is to present and illustrate the use of the framework of systematic organization as a basis for family-oriented nursing practice and research. This is a worthy purpose, because it is one of the first nursing theories to address the family systematically as both a context for the health and illness of individual members and as a unit in its own right. The framework adds family and family health to the standard nursing metaparadigm elements of person, environment and heath. It goes beyond existing theories by reflecting systematic attention to many contemporary issues, such as nontraditional family structure, life span considerations, and cultural influences. The target audience for the book is graduate nursing students. It may be a useful resource for any nurse practicing or conducting research with families. The book contains 350 pages of text, with few figures and tables. The table of contents and headings are helpful in directing the reader. The 26-page list of references is useful. This bookpresents a nursing theory that performs the valuable service of acknowledging the importance of the family as context and unit of service in health and illness. The book provides a useful resource for both family nursing and nursing theory, because it goes beyond setting forth the elements of the theory to providing numerous examples of its application in both healthy process and crisis situations. Although research implications of the theory are given some attention, the treatment is overly brief. The book offers an interesting view of nursing practice that provides an alternative to older, more individually focused nursing theories.
