Good story with some hot intro to a little kink. Many characters come together from the past to fold back relationships of young boys to solidify friendships of the men they now are. Hurts and emotional neglect cause Hayden to do things she should not. Lots of intrigue with enough holes left open for future books. I would like to know why Hayden and Wes parents are so cold towards them All in all a good book and look forward to more from all these characters.

I love it when a writer manages to create a series with common threads yet such rich diversity! With her second in the Surrender series, Lauren Smith has done just that. While most of the characters from her first, The Gilded Cuff, returned for this second installment, the tone of this one mixed things up a bit by virtue of the heroes upbringing. The result made for rich conflict between the hero and heroine, which I absolutely loved! The blending of storylines and tropes for this book were fantastic. Two social backgrounds colliding (the hero and heroine), lost brothers reunited, escaping lifelong confines to grow and mature…Lauren really packed in loads of goodness with this book. I really enjoyed the first, but this one is my favorite in the series so far. It’s probably a bit too soon to call The Gilded Cage the hands-down winner for the series, though. The hints dropped for the next one promise all kinds of Lauren Smith goodness.

If you haven’t read the first book in the series, The Gilded Cuff, stop right here. The Gilded Cage is a continuation of the plot line presented in the first book. Without having read it, you will not be able to fully appreciate the story. That being said, if you have read it, please continue on with this review. The Gilded Cage highlights a very important aspect to any character’s life. As perfect as it may seem, nothing is as it appears. Hayden is a spoiled little rich girl from Long Island. Everyone around her treats as she is a precious jewel to possess. She just wants the chance to be herself and now the cookie cutter rich woman that everyone makes her out to be. She wants to be loved the way she needs. Her time at the Gilded Cuff showed her that she doesn’t fit into anyone’s mold of a good submissive. She likes to use her smart and sassy mouth to illicit punishment from her partner. Her journey to find Fenn Lockwood in this book is her way of throwing caution to the wind and living her life outside the glass house she was born into. Fenn’s side of this story is much like his brother’s in the first novel with the exception he has no idea why anyone wants to kill him or that he had another family before his memory loss. As time continues and Fenn’s memory starts to resurface slowly, he’s shown just how far the person behind his disappearance and reemergence in another part of the country is willing to go to finish the job. Smith has managed to take Emery’s character and give him genuinely down to earth qualities in his long lost twin brother. I was so afraid going into this book that we’d just be given a re-boot of Emery in Fenn’s character, but that’s not the case at all. These two men share few qualities and that relieves me to no end. The story itself has so much to offer in terms of different plot lines and themes. One second your panties are combusting from heat than you are whisked away into terror and suspense. Smith’s ability to combine a multitude of plot themes into one cohesive story is brilliant. She was even able to keep the villain’s true identity away from a seasoned reader like me who usually can guess the bad guy from a mile away. With all that being said, I can’t wait for Wes’ story in the next book. That man has some serious issues and I want to experience every single one of them.

All in all, this was a good book which never got "boring". The actions happening during the course of action are presented fluently, so I enjoyed reading this book in two days. When you start reading, you get introduced to mainly two different worlds which are connected because of things which happened in the past. This is the most important part of the story as it affects all the characters, especially the main character Fenn, even now in the present. When he was kidnapped together with his brother Emery when he was 8, everybody thought he died while actually, he just started living a new life i Colorado. I loved the way how the twin-topic played such an important role. Even when they are apart, there is such a deep connection I have read some books in which this wasn't really used.... But it is someting special which should be definetly not forgotten as it made this book very special. In general I liked the way how all the characters developed during the course of action. The only thing I would like to critizise at this point is the fact that sometimes, it was a little bit confusing as the point of view changed too often(in my opinion). The book includes a lot of different aspects (BDSM, the Twins-connection, the wealthy family-part, the ranch-guy background,...). There was always something new to discover- sometimes in my opinion too much. This is the reason why this book "only" gets 3 stars. It's obvious that Lauren Smith tried to put a lot into the story. It's not like it didn't work out at the end, but in my opinion she should have written more books coping with the single topics instead of putting it all into one book. Mentioning their interes in the BDSM world for example is something which could have been left out as it at the end not really played that big role. Even then, they could have lived a steamy and hot love-life. One thing I wrote down as well is the fact that it was sometimes too predictable. At some times it was ok, but if you warn the reader two pages ago before exactly this happens to them, there is no "surprise" left. At the end I just can say that I really want to get to know ore about Hayden. She is the character I liked most as she finally is able to break free. I will read the other books of this series for sure

This is the second book and I would strongly suggest reading them in order. I'm sure that you would be glad that you did, as book one sets the scenario and you would miss a lot by skipping it. I really liked The Gilded Cuff, book one in the Surrender series. I reviewed it awhile ago and I have been waiting for this one. The Gilded Cage picked up right where book one left off. This book focused on Fenn and Hayden. This book had plenty of suspense, sexy scenes including some tying and kink ;-) action and danger, plotting, romance and some tender moments too. I am happy to say that this book was just as good as the first, maybe even a little better. It was definitely worth the wait but I really hope The Gilded Chain, book three, is available quicker. :-) I received an ecopy in exchange for my honest opinion. I was glued to my kindle with very few breaks. Lauren has a way of pulling me in and wrapping me up in the words she writes. It is addictive, endearing, adrenaline spiking and super sexy. I am so ready for more! ;-) If you like your books with plenty of sexy, a huge heaping of suspense, and characters that will work their way into your heart, this series is for you!

Intriguing and Compelling Romantic Suspense Favorite Quotes: “Words – not his – scratched across the back of his eyes and burrowed into his mind like scorpions, leaving only stark fear behind.” “He kissed her like a man savoring a rich glass of wine, or a favorite dish of food.” “There was such an intense and refreshing aspect to men who said what they meant and didn’t try to play games.  Not like the men back home, who spent more money on mistresses than wives and didn’t know the first thing about working hard at anything.” “A woman never jokes about chocolate or ice cream and certainly not when they’re together.  That’s serious business.” My Review: The Gilded Cage was an action-packed, romantic-suspense, thrill ride.  It was much spicier than The Gilded Cuff, which was also intriguing and suspenseful, although the protagonists of this volume were more adventuresome and prone to risk taking, in all settings.  There were assassination attempts, abductions, bar fights, rodeo bull-riding, a bar brawl, car accidents, bombings, shootings, long-lost relatives found and reunited, love and lust sparked and ignited, phew… while all that sounds exhausting… I loved it.   The story was well-plotted and emotive, the writing was compelling and insightful.  Lauren Smith’s characters are smart, witty, and uniquely compelling… being somewhat volatile, yet secretly soft and tender marshmallows.  I adored them and look forward to more of this series.

The first book I read by Lauren Smith was The Gilded Cuff and I completely fell in Love with her writing. The story of Emory and Sophie was so intriguing and heartbreaking that I simply couldn't put the book down. And I immediately knew that reading Fenn's story was simply a must. That's why I was so happy when I got the chance to review The Gilded Cage. True to the style I got to know with the first book in The Surrender Series, I was captivated by the first few words and I simply couldn't stop reading until I reached the last page. The writing is simply superb and in my opinion it cannot get much better than that. The characters are well developed, complex and very interesting. The story line in itself is quite captivating, full with a healthy dose of danger and suspense which are nicely balanced with the extremely hot, sometimes fun but always explosive interactions between Fenn and his other half Hayden. Fenn is definitely one alpha dominant male that you will salivate after. Even though he is physically identical to his twin brother and they share some character traits (such as their dominant nature), they are also quite different. I was left with the feeling that he is a little bit wilder than Emory. Where Emory closed off himself from the world and the danger, Fenn, in a way, went seeking it (bull riding is not exactly a safe sport). I have to say that finally reading his story and what exactly happened all those years ago, broke my heart and brought tears to my eyes on more than one occasion. I cannot imagine how difficult it could be to have to live through all that. Fenn's relationship with Hayden is the perfect addition to the suspenseful and dangerous story. The chemistry between them is explosive and the sparks fly from the first moment their eyes meet and I cannot say that I blame Hayden. I will also want to lick that fine specimen of a man from top to bottom (although I am not really sure whether I will start with Fenn or with Emory :D). As you probably already figured out, I am definitely a fan of the Lockwood twins but I wasn't sure that I would like Hayden. In the first book I was left with the impression that she was a little bit too much of a drama queen in a way. So I was pleasantly surprised when I got to know her better in this story. It is true that she is a little bit reckless and sometimes she acts before she thinks but she is also strong, independent, smart and very loyal. She is also ready to do everything for the people she loves, and in specific on Fenn Lockwood :) In a way she is Fenn's perfect other half and exactly what he needed to help him through the nightmare he has to live through once again. So in a few words if I have to summarize, I will just say that The Gilded Cage and The Surrender Series are phenomenal. The Gilded Cage is one of the best books I've read so far this year and I definitely recommend it to everyone who enjoys their books with fast-paced action, healthy dose of suspense and danger and all that topped with off the charts chemistry between the main characters and scenes that will melt your panties and leave you breathless. I can guarantee that you won't regret reading this series and this author. I just hope that the next book in the series (Wes and Callie's) story will come out soon because otherwise I will be suffering from withdrawal issues :D This review was originally posted at Living In Our Own Story Book Blog. I received an ARC of the book in exchange of an honest review.

Hayden Thorne has nothing to lose! She is from a wealthy family, but no one understands her. Her parents want to parade her around hoping she will make a match with one of their rich associates sons. Making themselves look good. It’s all about looks. Nevermind that they don’t even ask her what she wants. She has an MBA, but her mother thinks she should forget about all that and find herself a husband. Her brother, Wes, doesn’t really pay much attention. He is a man after all and completely independent these days. She wishes there was a way to show everyone that she is just as smart and capable as they think they are. She finally figures out a way to shoe them! The Lockwood Twins were kidnapped 25 years ago before she was born! But her brother had been close to the twins, Emery and Fenn. Through him, she finds out that the missing and presumed dead twin, Fenn is alive and living in a small country town.  She must get to him first and be the one to bring him home! Then maybe her parents will see her for who she really is. So she grabs the family’s private jet and takes off to find him. She finds him alright! In the middle of a bull riding ring getting thrown from a bull! The clowns are late and she is wearing a little red dress, might as well distract the bull! She jumps in the ring and saves Fenn from getting trampled and the adventure begins! Fenn can’t believe his eyes! A gorgeous woman in a barely there red dress comes out of nowhere to distract the bull that just threw him off! What the? He has no idea what is in store for him with this woman! I really liked the message in this novel! Hayden’s parents have her trapped, They control her income, her days and her future, thus the name of the book, The Gilded Cage. That is what she is living in. But she is persistent. She is strong, but she needs a little push in the right direction. This is a continuation of The Gilded Cuff and I highly recommend reading that book first. The characters are dynamic and real. The things that happen to them are heartbreaking but also very realistic. The writing is fantastic and kept me on the edge of my seat reading until way past bedtime! The teaser at the end for the next book, The Gilded Chain, has me impatiently waiting for the release of it! The “heat factor” is very high! Just be aware! 8 out of 10 maybe there is BDSM, but it is not a lot and nothing hardcore.

I adore Lauren Smith's SURRENDER series. I loved the first story, THE GILDED CUFF and got hooked to it, as soon, as I got a glimpse of it. I soon got pulled again with her second story THE GILDED CAGE, a sizzling romance with a mysterious intrigue! This story has controlling and dominating issues with a dash of BDSM, which won't prevent you from turning pages after pages! You'll get caught as I did! I devoured this story! This story was so captivating that it got my attention and kept me turning the pages! If you have read the first story, you may recall that in 1990, Emery and his twin brother Fenn, were abducted at the age of eight from their family's home. What happened to them? Nobody knows! The man responsible is still lurking around! Is Fenn, now, in danger? Since his kidnapping, he is suffering from a head trauma and forgot part of his past. Enters Hayden in his life! Hayden and Fenn are natural Sub and Dom, so, are they meant for each other? Can their relationship evolve to passion or are they together just for the fun? Their story is complicated, filled with lots of twists and turns! Will the assassin strike again? Remember that Fenn can be himself only within the walls of his private BDSM world—a place of erotic obsession. Will Hayden abandon herself in the scorching embrace of Fenn's arms? Will he finally deal with his past, and be able to go on with his life? Again, the chemistry between Fenn and Hayden is explosive! If, you are looking for a summer read, with a dash of sensuality and mystery, then go and grab this book The Gilded Cage, I am sure it will please you. I really recommend this book and looking forward to reading the next one The Gilded Chain, Callie and Wes's story! I’m a huge fan of Lauren Smith’s books!

Sure enough Hayden tricks Wes( Her brother) and takes the family plane and flies to where Fern is . Fern, Emmerys twin is a bull rider and he doesn't remember anything. He doesn't remember being a billionaires son or brother. If you read the first book ( the Gilded Cuff) you will know that Emmery saved Sofie and killed Antonio ( their kidnapper when they were small). Hayden shows up at the Rodeo in a short red dress. Fern is on a bull trying to win some money to save the ranch where he grew up . He needs that money but Hayden in the mini Red Dress distracts him and he falls off. Not only that she actually saves him by distracting the bull. She follows him to the Ranch where he has a trailer and Fern opens the door and just pins her. He has natural Dom feelings for Fern and Fern has tried the Cuff( the BSMN club ) as a sub . But no Dom has made her feel comfortable and secure in her being a sub, she actually mouths off to them. When Fern has her Pinned , Wes ( Haydens brother and Ferns and Emerys childhood friend) finds both of them together and the 2 boys go at it.. Fast forward a bit there is an accident on the mountain slops that the assassin tried to kill Fern and Hayden , there is another one at the Ranch,. Fern goes back to Long Island and meets his family. Hayden and Him are a natural Dom and Sub together and they cant keep each others hands of each other . The assassin strikes again . Wont tell you how or where . Wont tell you who it is trying to kill the twins . Lots of twists and turns and lots happening in the story I devoured the story. Its a must get , not enough stars for it. Seriously cant wait for Wes story.

This book was as good as the first in the series. Though I have to say that Fenn was a little hotter since he's a cowboy. The chemistry between Fenn and Hayden is scorching hot! This book all the elements I love in book humor, romance, passion, and suspense. Fenn is the long lost Lockwood heir that was believed to be dead. He can't remember anything from that life, but when spitfire Hayden runs into his life little snatches come back. With help they may finally unravel the mystery revolving around who wants the twins dead. They must keep their eyes and ears open because someone is out there to finish the job.

4.5 out of 5 Stars *Complimentary ARC provided by the publisher via NetGalley for the purpose of an honest review. For an author to be able to make me like and grow to love a 23 year old heroine is nigh impossible, but Ms. Smith pulled off that miracle. And if that wasn't enough, the sizzling, sensual and erotic assault from the chemistry between Fenn and Hayden was a delicious torture. And finally, the author wasn't afraid to include suspense tinged with a darkness that was somewhat chilling and could be a trigger.  I loved Hayden's (23) firecracker personality. She was sassy without being childish, unlike most heroines her age. A great combination of beauty and brains. She was bold, outgoing, compassionate and empathetic. As a submissive, she had a reputation for being mouthy, aggressive, and trying to top from the bottom. Hayden secretly longed for a dom to control her in the bedroom, but she’d never been able to trust one. Thanks to oppressive, elitist snobs as parents, she yearned to be be free. That yearning automatically suppressed her natural submissive nature. Fenn (33) was a wonderful hero. His tragic childhood and the man he grew up to be against all odds, as well as his love and protective streak for his adopted family showed a deeply compassionate and honorable side of him. He was also a dominant like his twin, without the BDSM background. Another thing I loved was the contrast in lifestyles between the two twins. Where Emery was a CEO type, Fenn grew up to be a cowboy and bull rider. A dominant cowboy? Hell yes, please! There were six sex scenes in total, and each one of them was a sensual assault on the libido. I loved Hayden and Fenn together because they each gave the other what they wanted or needed. I'd say this was a BDSM-lite story because it was mostly bondage and spanking without the other lifestyle nuances. No condoms were used (he was clean and she had an IUD). Just in case that bothers anyone.  The identity of the true villain pulling the strings wasn't really a secret, but that didn't dampen my enjoyment of the unfolding events. I felt there was a nice trade-off between suspense and romance that built up gradually towards the climax. The villain's reason may have seemed lame, but he was a nutjob. The assassin surprised me. Despite some of Greyson's despicable actions in this story, there appeared to be room for redemption. While I admired Hayden's courage in the end, she still managed to get herself into trouble (twice) which made things more difficult for the guys.  The epilogue set up Wes and Callie's story, and call me cruel, but I enjoyed the moment when Wes gave Callie a wake-up call that Fenn was irrevocably off the market. I can not wait for that story (the heroine is twenty but she wasn't annoying in this book, so I have high hopes).

4 - "This is the beginning, not the end." Stars! The Gilded Cage literally takes off where The Gilded Cuff left off, if you haven’t read the first book in Lauren Smith’s Surrender series I recommend you do so, to get the full background on Fenn Lockwood, and the reasons for everything, especially in the first half of the book being such a shock to him. Although this review doesn’t offer any spoilers on this book, it potentially will for The Gilded Cuff, if you haven’t read it. It is not secret that I am a huge fan of Lauren Smiths writing, as an author she has the breadth and depth of imagination to be able to turn her hand to pretty much any genre, this isn’t a skill that a lot of authors manage to execute well, and I always find myself a little excited and a lot intrigued too see where this talented lady will take her readers next. Whereas book one of this series, comprehensively ’set the scene’, as well as giving you Emery Lockwood’s story, it also gave you Emery’s recollections of leaving his brother behind and the belief that he had been killed at the hands of their captor. As he discovered towards the end of the book that wasn’t the case, and Fenn Lockwood, now Smith is actually alive, well and living in Walnut Springs as a ranch hand and occasional Bull Rider. This is Fenn and Hayden’s story, the head-strong sister of Will Thorne, once and still friend of the Lockwood twins. The connection between them both, starts off hot and burns brighter as the book progresses, both have particular tastes when it comes to the bedroom, and Fenn’s particular penchant for control and tying, definitely ticks all of Hayden’s boxes, feeling particularly unfulfilled in that area of her life he offers a welcome release for her, as fully trusting the man she gives herself to, gives her the opportunity to do something that she has struggled with in the past… Submit. ”You’re sleeping in your skin tonight and nothing else.” There is no doubt that Lauren put everything she has into this book, it is full of action, twists, turns, and the reunion between the Lockwood family after the years of searching and hoping, had me in tears, the subsequent fall out for Fenn’s discovery and then return, and the kidnappers attempt at exacting revenge, all make for an entertaining and multi paced read, that you will struggle to put down. ”We are friends, always and forever.” The glimpses you are also given of Will Thorne and Callie Taylor together, offer up just enough to make this reader, pretty impatient for the next book in the series The Gilded Chain (due October 2015) is their story, a known Dom, and a heart-sore, country girl in Paris… I am excited already! ARC generously provided by the author, and it was my absolute pleasure to provide the above honest review in exchange.
