About the Author

Sandra Markle is the author of numerous award-winning books for children. A former elementary science teacher, she is a nationally-known science education consultant. Markle has received many honors for her series Animal Predators, Animal Scavengers, and Animal Prey. Several titles have been named as National Science Teachers Association (NSTA)/Children’s Book Council (CBC) Outstanding Science Trade Books for Students K-12, and Animal Predators was honored as a Top 10 Youth Nonfiction Series by Booklist.

Markle is also the author of the Insect World series and several single titles. Her book Rescues! was named a Best Book by the Society of School Librarians International and a Recommended Title of Outstanding Nonfiction by the National Council of Teachers of English’s (NCTE) Orbis Pictus Award committee; Animal Heroes was named a 2008 Lasting Connections title by Book Links. Markle lives in Lakewood Ranch, Florida with her husband, photographer Skip Jeffery.

Gr 2–5—Opening with a harrowing situation where a mother rhino is simply living and protecting her baby before being struck by a poacher, Markle's latest does not pull any punches to convey the extreme danger of the southern white rhino becoming extinct. From the beginning scene to informative sections that expertly explain what a dire situation poaching has become for the rhinos, readers will be informed and enthralled throughout the fact-filled narrative. This title makes for an excellent introduction to endangered species and extinction's effects on the environment by explaining why poachers do what they do and providing a detailed look at what lengths wildlife groups and scientists have gone to in order to save these creatures. There are also details about the life of a rhino, from how their young are raised to what their horns are made of. The pictures are clear, large, and well organized on the page. On the African savanna, efforts to save the southern white rhino require varied approaches.Continuing a longtime focus on animal conservation and rescue, science educator Markle turns her attention to the plight of the southern white rhino. This giant mammal, an important "ecosystem engineer," was brought close to extinction in the mid-20th century by hunting and loss of habitat before being rediscovered, protected, and restored. Now it is threatened again, by poachers harvesting its horns for their rumored therapeutic powers. The author introduces her disturbing story with a suspenseful description of a poacher attack and concludes with the targeted rhino's rescue and the species' prospects for the future. In between, she covers protection efforts in South Africa that include: reserves and restrictions against hunting, relocation, market attempts to reduce horn value, helping survivors of horn removal, and the use of patrols and trained dogs. The clear and well-organized exposition weaves in plenty of information about the habits and habitats of this remarkable species and the nature of its coveted horn. Appealing design includes photos from a variety of sources, many showing rhino mothers and their calves and more than a few showing their human African protectors, both white and black. These images are captioned with clear explanations and additional information. Supportive backmatter includes a good list of books and websites about all kinds of rhinos appropriate for the intended readers. Another compelling, hopeful account of ecosystem defense.
