Read an Excerpt

The Handbook of Art and Design Terms is intended for use both in the classroom and as a general reference in the study of art and design. Individual entries are not meant to be exhaustive. Rather, my purpose in compiling this text was that it serve as a starting point to the wealth of vocabulary found in the various related disciplines. A selected bibliography of valuable art, design, and architecture publications can be found at the end of The Handbook of Art and Design Terms.

The seed for development of The Handbook of Art and Design Terms was the absence of a broad, practical art and design reference text, one both simple in scope and weighing something less than ten pounds. Indeed, novice foundation students and students for whom English is not their first language have been clamoring for such a simplified text in my Pratt Institute classes for a number of years. I am greatly indebted to Greta Earnest, Kathleen Hopkins, Bill Fasolino, Diana Gisolfi, Frank Lind, and Richard Perry for their support and expertise in this endeavor.

I truly hope The Handbook of Art and Design Terms will prove to be an invaluable resource for students, teachers, and for those who, like myself, possess a thirst for understanding the language of art.
