Overview

While Richard Lattimore's 1951 translation of Homer's The Iliad is commendable, as are the more recent translations by Robert Fagles (1990) and Stephen Mitchell (2011), for most readers, no translation surpasses the beauty and skill of Alexander Pope. As Daniel Mendelsohn wrote in The New Yorker (October 31, 2011), after noting that it took Pope seven years to complete his volume: "Many consider it the greatest English Iliad, and one of the greatest translations of any work into English. It manages to convey not only the stateliness and grandeur of Homer's lines, but their speed and wit and vividness." Mendelsohn compares a passage from all four translations mentioned above, then notes Pope's precision and detail before proclaiming the Pope translation "the grandest and the most minutely detailed there is ever likely to be." Caroline Alexander's 2015 translation and Peter Green and Barry P. Powell's 2017 translations notwithstanding, it is difficult to imagine anyone as uniquely talented to translate Homer's epic Classical poem than the Neo-Classical Pope. This is the fully illustrated Alexander Pope translation of Homer's epic poem. The Watersgreen House print editions are set in easy-to-read 11-point Sylfaen font (including the footnotes).

About the Author

The ancient Greek poet Homer established the gold standard for heroic quests and sweeping journeys with his pair of classic epic poems, The Iliad and The Odyssey. Crowded with characters, both human and non-human, and bursting with action, the epic tales detail the fabled Trojan War and the adventures of Odysseus as he struggles to return home. Homer’s epics have inspired countless books and works of art throughout their long history.
