The Inquisition of the Holy Office: testimony of a woman in Cartagena de Indias during the 17th century
.....From its origin, the Tribunal of the Inquisition of the Holy Office in the city of Cartagena de Indias was constituted as a stage not only to judge and condemn people who had attempted against the Catholic faith, but also as a space where people who appeared before the inquisitorial authorities told what happened to the court, in the Caribbean region of the audience of Santa Fe.The scenario was similar to a theatrical performance, where the protagonists were authors and artists of what happened there. It specifically resembled the Greek tragedies that, according to Aristotle, were intended to represent before an audience what was happening in the city.Such a scenario was configured over time, from its beginning in the seventeenth century until its extinction in the nineteenth century. It was the drama of the human being that inhabited that region of the city of Cartagena de Indias and its province. The case or cases to be described in this text are related to a woman of that colonial American era: the inquisitorial processes carried out by the Tribunal of the Holy Office of the city of Cartagena de Indias against some women sorcerers.
