The Making Of A Collegian: A Lifelong Journey Inside Higher Education
THE MAKING OF A COLLEGIAN is a nonfiction genre in its own right. The book is a true story about the author's nearly lifelong participation in all phases of higher education. But it is also an unprecedented and captivating recounting of both the unspoken graces and surreptitious peccadillos of the collegiate world and their developmental effects on members of the university community. It is a uniquely stark view of higher education from the inside – the heartening, the odd, and the almost incredible. No punches are pulled. No tributes are suppressed. The author takes you with him through the entire experience of the successive roles in the life of a collegian, from the intimidation and fascination of the freshman year to the awe and grandeur of the university presidency. Along the way you will encounter both the saints and the gremlins of the collegiate realm, just as he did. This intimate perspective on the world of higher education might surprise you. It is bound to change how you think about academia.

About the Author

JAMES D. EVANS was the first member of his family to attend college. He loved the world of higher
learning so much that he spent half a century living and working in it as one of its most enthusiastic
denizens. After earning three degrees in psychology, he became a full-time professor who always placed the
students’ education at the top of his priorities. When he was not teaching, he was learning, conducting
scholarly research, consulting, or writing scientific articles and college textbooks. In the latter half of his
career Evans was “conscripted” into academic administration, where he held various positions, including
those of dean, chief academic officer, and university president. He served on dozens of community boards
and councils during both his faculty tenure and his administrative years, and he has received numerous
honors and public recognitions for his leadership in education and regional community service. He holds
lifetime memberships in the American Psychological Association, the Midwestern Psychological
Association, and the Psychonomic Society. Even though he no longer writes in higher education, he still
finds great joy in writing about higher education.
