Overview

The Man Who Knew Too Much and other stories (1922) is a book of detective stories by English writer G. K. Chesterton, published in 1922 by Cassell and Company in the United Kingdom, and Harper Brothers in the United States. The book contains eight connected short stories about "The Man Who Knew Too Much", and additional unconnected stories featuring separate heroes/detectives. The United States edition contained one of these additional stories: "The Trees of Pride", while the United Kingdom edition contained "Trees of Pride" and three more, shorter stories: "The Garden of Smoke", "The Five of Swords" and "The Tower of Treason". The 1934 and 1956 films have nothing except the title in common with this book. Alfred Hitchcock, who directed both films, decided to use the title because he held the film rights for some of the stories in the book.

About the Author

G.K Chesterton (1874-1936) is an English author, philosopher, and respected critic of literature and art. Chesterton was a very religious man, and was so interested in theology that he is considered a lay theologian. Much of his work dealt with topics of theology and philosophy. Chesterton became politically active during the last years of his life, advocating against both capitalism and socialism. With the inclusion of both religious and political philosophy, the G.K Chesterton made invaluable contributions to theology, economics, and literature.

It’s a series of eight tangentially interconnected mysteries featuring Horne Fisher, a high-level bureaucrat who uses his inside knowledge and deductive reasoning to solve murders involving the political elite. Derek Perkins narrates these short stories, rendering perfectly the reserved, confident voices of English aristocrats. The mysteries, set in a mythical prewar England, are narrated subtly and unemotionally—Perkins’s tone is reserved, his words clearly enunciated. Regrettably, the stories show their age.
