Let me tell you a story about one of the worst retreats I ever attended.
The Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes fell during the retreat.
And during his homily, the priest, who was the head of the retreat center, told us that he'd been a priest for 17 years, and had never preached a homily on Our Lady.
Naturally, I thought, "What's he been preaching about on the Solemnities of the Immaculate Conception and the Assumption?" Not to mention all of Our Lady's other Feasts.
When he admitted that, the retreatants turned him off. The next day, he called out someone that he caught praying the Rosary during his homily.
I found out later, that when he called the person out, there were quite a few others who thought he was referring to them. Apparently, there was a Rosary Congress going on during his homily.
Here's why I bring this up.
Blessed Pope Pius IX stated:
"God has committed to Mary the treasury of all good things, in order that everyone may know that through her are obtained every hope, every grace, and all salvation. For this is His will, that we obtain everything through Mary."
And Pope St. Pius X wrote in the Encyclical Ad diem illum:
"Hence nobody ever knew Christ so profoundly as she did, and nobody can ever be more competent as a guide and teacher of the knowledge of Christ.
"Hence it follows, as We have already pointed out, that the Virgin is more powerful than all others as a means for uniting mankind with Christ."
So, getting spiritual advice from a priest who doesn't preach about Mary is like driving with four flats.
This collection of St. Robert Bellarmine's Marian writings puts air in all your tires.
St. Robert is your best one-two punch when it comes to showing you how to combine Marian doctrine and devotion.
Don't take my word for it. When Pope Clement VIII named St. Robert a Cardinal, he said:
"The Church of God has not his equal in learning."
St. Peter tells us: "Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope" (1 Pt. 3:15).
St. Robert gives you those explanations.
What's most impressive is that he defended Marian dogmas centuries before the Church formally defined them.
He brilliantly defends and sheds light on Our Lady's Perpetual Virginity, and her other privileges as well.
You'll enjoy his defense of the Salve Regina (Hail Holy Queen). Whereas St. Alphonsus Liguori wrote about it from a devotional point of view, St. Robert discusses it from an apologetics point of view.
When you see how well he explains Marian doctrine and devotion, you'll be pleasantly surprised to see just how easy it is to put what he says into practice.
Plus, for the first time in English, you'll see previously untranslated biographical material about St. Robert, showing you how he lived his own devotion to Mary.
In fact, he shows you precisely how to "learn from the example of Mary."
Since God grants all graces of salvation through Mary, devotion to her is the best way to help her carry out her mission of saving sinners.
Our Lady wants you to share in her compassion for sinners, and she asks for your help to save them.
To emphasize this, she showed the three shepherd children at Fatima a vision of hell, and told them...
"You have seen hell where the souls of poor sinners go. To save them, God wishes to establish throughout the world devotion to my Immaculate Heart."
The Bible tells us: "He must know that whoever causes a sinner to be converted from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins" (James 5:20).
