About the Author

Born in 1998 Lukasz Jarmula is a 23 year old Polish Grandmaster. His first GM norm was secured in January 2018 with a 6-3 result in the 8th Margaryan Memorial in Armenia. This 10-player round-robin event had an average ELO rating of 2503. Lukasz’s performance rating for this event was 2632! Lukasz’s second GM norm was earned at the GM section of the 2018 Czech Open where he finished 2nd behind GM Sergei Movesian with a 2612 performance rating and his final norm, same tournament in 2020. Since 2015 he has represented SV Griesheim in the German Bundesliga. He holds 17 medals from the Polish Youth Championships in all categories: Individual, Team, Rapid and Blitz. In 2016 he shared 2-5th place at the European Youth U18 and in 2014 won the silver medal at the European Youth Team Championship.

Just how far theory has progressed can be seen in the fact that it takes Polish Grandmaster Lukasz Jarmula’s two volumes and almost 800 pages to cover 6.Bg5. The Bg5 Najdorf Revisited is divided into two parts with volume one covering 6…e6 including the traditional main line, the Polugaevsky and Gelfand variations. Volume two is devoted to the Poison Pawn variation and 6…Nbd7. These volumes are written for both sides and the author is objective in his assessments, not showing a bias for either color. This book is well researched.  Jarmala writes: “My three most important sources were: Hiarcs 14zb Opening Book, an invaluable tool which provided a tree of the variations based on high-level correspondence and computer games; Parimarjan Negi’s 1.e4 vs The Sicilian I – a modern classic which hardly needs any introduction; and David Vigorito’s Playing the Najdorf: A Practical Repertoire, which is (in my opinion) the best book on the Najdorf to date.” One nice extra in this book are exercises designed to test the reader’s understanding of the 6.Bg5 Najdorf. These help to give life to what is a serious course of study. Those who want to learn the 6.Bg5 Najdorf will find these volumes invaluable even up to strong Grandmaster level.
