The Nativity 1000 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle: A Fitzwilliam Museum Publication
Domenico Ghirlandaio lived and worked in Florence towards the end of the 15th century and ran one of the largest and most successful artist workshops in the city. Many apprentices learnt their technique under Ghirlandaio’s watchful eye, including a young Michelangelo. For many years it was thought that this Nativity scene, depicting the Adoration of the Christ, was the work of a junior member of the workshop. However, when the painting was cleaned in the 1990s the superb execution of the Holy Family was revealed and the panel is now attributed to the Master’s own hand.

About the Author

Domenico Ghirlandaio (1448 - 1494) is known for his stylish, detailed paintings which he made his own by interweaving contrasting aspects of Northern and Western art traditions. As well as being significant artistic accomplishments in themselves, Ghirlandaio's religious frescos routinely featured portraits of prominent Florentine figures placed in modern settings. These works have left the world a rare and evocative insight into fifteenth-century Tuscan tastes and customs. Ghirlandaio numerous frescos and aristocratic portraits proved so popular the artist became inundated with commissions, leading him to establish a popular workshop. Ghirlandaio's name in the timeline of Renaissance art is underlined as the master who apprenticed a young Michelangelo.
