THE NEIGHBORS is an enjoyable novel centered around two families. McKinnon's writing draws you into the story from the start, and pretty soon it becomes clear the characters are keeping secrets from one another. Some are more obvious than others, but they all kept me turning the pages until the final, unexpected end. Disclosure: I received a free copy of this book.

3.5 One can only imagine Abby's shock to discover her new neighbors includes Liam, someone from a past she has run away from and is trying to keep secret. The two agree to act like they never knew each other. Little did they know that going down this path of deception world have a ruinous outcome. This was a quick and engrossing story. Everyone has a secret and it's not until the end that we see how the pieces fit together. It was all quite the roller coaster ride with and ending I did not see coming. Well done! I received this from Harlequin - Mira, via Netgalley.

The Neighbors by Hannah Mary McKinnon is an exploration of marital relationships and domestic drama. Abby is responsible for the car crash in 1992 that killed her beloved brother, something for which she can't forgive herself (and neither can her mother). After the accident she rebuff the affection of Liam, her boyfriend and true love, and broke up with him because she knew he would soon hate her as much as she hated herself too. It is now twenty years later and Abby is married to Nate. Nate pulled her to safety the night of the accident, but was unable to save her brother before the car burst into flames. It is their shared guilt that binds them together, as well as their daughter Sarah. It is clear that Nate is much more committed to their relationship than Abby. Now a new couple has moved next door and much to Abby's shock it is Liam, his wife Nancy, and their son Zac. When Liam doesn't admit to knowing Abby, Abby follows suit. Their unrevealed past results in more complications. The attraction between the two is still evident, although Abby pretends to dislike their new neighbors. She also is desperate to keep Sarah and Zac apart. Adding to the complications is Nancy's flirting and secret agenda regarding Nate. Get ready for a melodrama of daytime serial magnitude in The Neighbors. The narrative jumps back and forth in time and between the different voices of the characters which serves to showcase the background of the characters and their current thoughts. There is a plethora of entanglements and scheming. Expect an abundance of secrets, hidden history, and duplicitous plans going on behind the scenes. It all becomes a rather entangled mess. The writing is good and moves the plot forward, albeit rather slowly at the beginning while the various complications and deceit between the characters is being set up. And there is a whole lot to set up... While many reviewers seemed to enjoy The Neighbors, I had two looming problems with it: the sheer predictability of the plot and the uninspired ending. I knew what the twists would be almost immediately. I continued reading simply to see when they would be revealed - and if I was correct (I was). It took a long time to get there, though. The Neighbors is a good novel; however, it isn't quite to my preferred inclination in fiction. Disclosure: My review copy was courtesy of MIRA Books.

1992 Abby and her brother, Tom, have just been in an auto accident. Abby was thrown from the car but Tom was trapped inside as it went up in flames. A man named Nate happened upon the accident and although he wasn’t able to get Tom out of the car, he was able to get help for Abby. She blames herself and says she was drinking and driving but doesn’t remember anything. Abby had been in love with a man named Liam but broke it off. Nate was so helpful after her accident and they ended up getting married. Now, Abby and Nate are the parents of a teen named Sarah. They see that they are getting new neighbors and when they introduce themselves to them, Abby realizes the man is Liam. He is married to Nancy and they have a teen named Zac. Abby and Liam pretend that they have never met. Nancy is a very outgoing woman and wants the two couples to be close and spend time together. Nate is a kind and helpful man and has volunteered to help Nancy with some redecorating around the house as Liam is just not talented in that area. The story flashes back and forth from the present to the past and the reader sees the relationship that Liam and Abby had shared and evidently their love for one another is still alive. Dare they risk an affair? This book expresses how guilt can overtake one’s life as it has Abby’s as she is always trying to atone for Tom’s death. We see the temptation to cheat on one’s spouse and how secrets are not always easy to keep. I cannot give away anything more because I don’t want to reveal spoilers. I enjoyed this book and I know readers will enjoy it. Copy provided by NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.

MY REVIEW OF “THE NEIGHBORS” BY HANNAH MARY McKinnon Hannah Mary McKinnon, Author of “The Neighbors’ has written an intense, captivating, and intriguing novel. It is amazing how Hannah Mary McKinnon weaves a layered story with colorful characters and vivid descriptions. I appreciate the twists and turns, and ups and downs and the unexpected surprising finale. This is a story of how lies , betrayals deception and secrets can intensify the acts of the characters, and the course of devastating events. The timeline is in both the present and the past when it pertains to the characters and events. This is a fictional book with psychological suspense and mystery. The author describes her characters as complicated and complex. From Goodreads , this blurb states “In 1992, a car accident kills a young man and forever changes the lives of three people…..Now, twenty years later , they’ll all come to regret the choices they made that day, as the secrets and lies they’ve told to protect each other become the very thing that tears their lives apart”. Abby and her husband Nate live with their daughter in a comfortable house. They are getting new neighbors. In a twist of fate, Liam, Abby’s former lover and his family move it. Both Abby and Liam pretend they have never met. The dark secrets and memories are haunting. What could happen if these secrets are revealed? After reading the amazing conclusion, all I could say was WOW, OMG!!!! I would highly recommend this riveting and dramatic novel. Happy Reading !!
