Description: This is a broad review of neurocritical care topics as well as selected topics of other critical care specialties such as neurosurgery, surgery, internal medicine, and cardiac ICU. The book goes into great depth on each topic and provides a comprehensive review.
Purpose: According to the authors, the book is designed as a study aid for the boards. The book provides very helpful review material, is not solely useful for board preparation. It also solidifies existing knowledge and improves clinical practice.
Audience: The intended audience is neurology and neurosurgery residents, fellows, and off-service rotators. For medical students, the book would be too specialized and advanced. For residents in neurology or neurosurgery though, it addresses everything they need to know while rotating in the neurocritical care unit. The book has many authors of all levels of training (from residents to fellows to attendings and chairmen). The authors are trained in different specialties such as anesthesia, neurosurgery, neurology etc., which results in a well-rounded book.
Features: The chapters on subarachnoid hemorrhages and vascular neurosurgery stand out because of their depth. In the epilepsy chapter, the very helpful table with the IV medications for status epilepticus contains loading dose, infusion rate, and titration parameters. The change I would suggest in the answer section is to present not just the letter of the correct answer, but the full correct answer (e.g. E. Inferolateral trunk), which makes it easier to remember the question without having to go back to the question page.
Assessment: This book is one of a kind and provides extremely helpful review material for the boards. It is very valuable and I would recommend it to residents/fellows. To my knowledge, there is no other comprehensive review book like this.
