This is a collection of 12 short chapters, each describing a particular aspect of DNA organization in the nucleus. The purpose is to discuss different aspects of the spatial organization of the eukaryotic genome and its relation to the functional genome organization in a way that is comprehensible to scientists and students. The topic has been reviewed extensively during the years in the regular literature. Many of the topics covered have recently received book treatment. The questions and controversies are clearly defined. In this respect, the author has been successful in his goal to present these ideas to a general audience. The target audience is the practicing scientist and student who are not familiar with the subject of nuclear genome organization. The author is a long-time investigator in one particular aspect of this area of study, and this is reflected in the bias toward the chromatin aspects of nuclear organization. The book is well illustrated with a good mix of experimental results and descriptive diagrams. Some of the figures presenting experimental data are of poor quality, with fuzzy lettering and thick typefaces detracting from the overall quality of the book. The references are up-to-date and inclusive of researchers with widely conflicting opinions. Each chapter gives several prominent reviews as references where the reader can find more detailed information on each topic. The chapters are very short, perfect for an introduction to each topic, but those more familiar with these topics will be disappointed by their lack of detail and discussion of models. This is a good introduction to the current state of knowledge on the organization of DNA in the nucleus.It is biased in favor of a particular interpretation of available data, but it should be useful to students as an entry to the literature. Libraries may find this book useful to own, but the individual researcher will not find much here to look back to after the first reading.
