The Players: A Tale of Deception and Desire

What starts as a colorful reflection on the sisters' wild and winding pasts turns into a full-blown mystery when their 70th birthday party spirals into a drug-induced disaster. The book blends memoir-like storytelling with satirical humor, some noir-ish vibes, and a full cast of shady, lovable, and totally bizarre neighbors.

I was hooked by the strangeness of Bella and Lena's origin story. It sets the tone for a novel that's unapologetically offbeat.

Gail Marten has written the side characters like they're straight out of a dark sitcom. These characters are exaggerated, sure, but also weirdly real . . . The birthday party gone wrong is where things take a sharp left turn. What was fun and flirty becomes chaotic, even grotesque. If you like stories with a campy edge, dramatic women, ghostly encounters, and unexpected mayhem, give this one a shot.

About the Author

Climbing the iconic steps where Sylvester Stallone would later train for his role in the film, Rocky, teenager Gail Marten attended classes at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and marveled at the phenomenal work of legendary artists displayed in the galleries. Inspired, visual art became her manner of creative expression. When Marten relocated to Maryland in 1976, a series of unforeseen events led to the discovery of her musical talent. She put away her art supplies and embarked on a long and amazing career as an award-winning jazz vocalist and songwriter. She produced four albums, Beyond the Rainbow, Pure Joy, Is It Love, and In Love Again, and her music is included on more than 30 compilation albums created by EQ Music in Indonesia. Due to recurring vocal difficulties, Marten no longer performs; however, her music is still played every day on international radio stations in more than 35 countries. The creative spark that was extinguished when she could no longer make music was reignited in 2019 when Marten began writing short stories. We hope you enjoy reading her novella. She is currently at work on a new book.
