This book attempts to bridge the gap between the actual criteria and the more difficult task of obtaining the information during clinical interactions.
Purpose: The author states that he has written this book to "serve as a map, as a pragmatic companion, for using the DSM-5 in diagnostic interviews."
Audience: Though marketed for students or residents, this work also may prove helpful for psychiatric social workers, psychiatric nurse practitioners, nurses, and experienced psychologists and psychiatrists.
Features: Generally, this book follows the organizational structure of the DSM-5, meaning it begins with an introduction to the diagnostic interview and continues through attempts to transition the new concepts in DSM-5 to useful clinical applications. Each chapter has a conclusion section that reiterates the important aspects just discussed, and the book ends with a brief but useful and relevant reference section. The author also provides DSM-5 page numbers for section topics to create a more fluid link between the two works.
Assessment: The release of the newest DSM has created a need for publications that highlight the differences between the old and new versions, which is vital for readers interested in translating the esoteric discussions about diagnosis into practical applications for clinical use. This is a useful book that accomplishes this goal. Chapters are brief to allow for quick scanning, and the DSM-5 page numbers make accessing information in the DSM-5 almost seamless.
