3.5 stars. DISCLAIMER: I was a beta reader for the second half of this former online serial (recommended by Ilona Andrews), but the novella underwent several substantial changes from the version I read to the final published book. No bribes or gifts were requested or received for this review. This novella is a fast but well-paced enjoyable read. It has a couple of well-written action scenes interspersed with the slow burn between Samara---queen of a rogue coalition of refugees, former thieves, and mercenaries---and Valentin Kos, the surprise new emperor of the Kos Federation. Given it's a novella, there's not a lot of room for background, exposition, or character development, but what's there provides a good sense of who Samara is (fiercely loyal, determined, and ruthless when needed), what's at stake for her people if her plans don't succeed, and the problems arising from the conflict between the Kos Federation and Quint Confederacy, including personal betrayals, double crosses, and calculated gambits. There's no cliffhanger. A sequel appears to be in the works. Perhaps we'll learn a little more of why Samara came to be an assassin, how Valentin is moving forward with ruling his empire, and what his dethroned brother Nikolas is up to. The author's full-length novel Polaris Rising is a separate tale that appears action packed. The first chapter is available at http://www.jessiemihalik.com/book/polaris-rising/. I've already preordered (release: February 5, 2019).
