Ariana Isabella claimed to be my guardian angel, but she never once said she was any good at it.

My name is Horace, and this is my story. Well, not my whole story, just the story of the summer of 1994, the summer in between my Junior and Senior years, the summer of Ariana. It's a story about friendship, backyard wrestling, the local music scene, rules, truth, thrift-shopping, and fairy tales. More than anything, it's a story about stories.

I hope you enjoy it. I did, mostly. I may not have lived happily ever after, but at least I lived.

The Red Spaces is a quirky coming-of-age story, set in the mid-90's against a backdrop of local music and a backyard wrestling league. Teenage wallflower Horace Anderson and Ariana Isabella, the exhaustingly cheerful young woman who knows a little too much about him, form an unlikely bond. All summer Ariana attempts to school Horace on the mechanics of being a guardian angel like forecasting the future, implanting memories of the past, and living in the present. In between stories that may or may not be about anything at all, Horace grapples with unspoken questions: Is Ariana actually human? Does it actually matter?
