The revue theater during the Vargas era
The teatro de revista was one of the most popular genres on Brazilian stages at the beginning of the 20th century. With texts based on current political and social events in the country, the revue shows attracted thousands of people to the theaters in Rio de Janeiro. The aim of this study is to analyze texts produced between 1929 and 1945 in order to understand what kind of political discussion is present in these works. The government of Getúlio Vargas was chosen as the time frame, since censorship has long been held responsible for the decline of political content in the teatro de revista. The aim is to understand which mechanisms of laughter were used by revue authors to circumvent censorship. It also focuses on the aesthetic changes that the genre has undergone and how this is related to the political changes that occurred simultaneously in the country, such as the 1930 Revolution, the Estado Novo coup and the Second World War.
