Overview

The Rocket Book, by Peter Newell, was published in 1912 by Harper & Brothers. It is a rhyming poem about the mischievous son of a janitor who, in the basement of a 21-story apartment building, lights a rocket which shoots up through the floors of several, causing disruption and surprise to the unsuspecting tenants, (and even to a prowling burgler), who are involved in various domestic activities. It is a delightful book and a true classic of American Children's Literature.

About the Author

Peter Sheaf Hersey Newell was born in McDonough County, Illinois on March 5, 1862. He was one of the most popular illustrators of his day and his style helped define the turn-of-the-century art. His work appeared in the most popular magazines of the day - Harper's, Saturday Evening Post, McClure's, Scribner's - and his work graced the novels of prominent authors such as Lewis Carol, Mark Twain and Stephen Crane. He also created a serialized comic strip called The Naps of Polly Sleepyhead, which first appeared in the New York Herald in 1905. He exited this dimension while in Little Neck, New York in 1924.
