The Sciontree: The First Corner: Bogglehole
The suspicious disappearance of a scientist, his son and two bodyguards in the vicinity of the forbidding Wormwood Mount triggers a police investigation in The Four Corners, a remote area of East Yorkshire where strange events are a common occurrence. At first, it appears that the scientist may have been kidnapped but the investigation takes a dramatic turn for the worse when his body and those of his two bodyguards are found on the mount. 'The Sciontree' follows the adventures of four young misfits who live in the village of Bogglehole who decide to investigate the crime while on their summer holiday. The teenagers quickly find themselves embroiled in a deadly game of cat and mouse between unknown adversaries in a mystery that deepens with every chilling discovery they make. 'The Sciontree' mixes elements of fantasy and science fiction with mythology and classic detective literature. It is a novel apt for teens and adults of all ages. The story pits magic and superstition against science and logic. Its themes are friendship, loss and sacrifice, which are explored with pathos and humour. The setting is a unique and original world that the four protagonists discover alongside the reader. The idyllic village of Bogglehole is the setting for 'The Sciontree' and the idiosyncratic portrayal of village life is the backdrop for the greater events taking place.

About the Author

I was born in 1965 in January and was brought up in a village on the outskirts of Hull. I had a happy childhood and much of what is in this novel is a reflection of my life then. I was not a good student but eventually found myself at the University of Sheffield studying law. I even went to Bar school at the Inns of Court in London and, even more improbably, passed. It was a last desperate fling of the student life I was reluctant to leave behind. Later, I moved to Spain with the idea of spending a year teaching English. I never left and have spent more than twenty years living here, the last fifteen or so in Seville. I share my home with my fabulous wife and our beautiful baby girl, two cats: an evil, cross-eyed Siamese and jet black one that behaves like a dog. I am the owner of language school and in my free time I like working with my hands: cooking, carpentry, sewing, drawing and model making. I enjoy good food and red wine and whiling away the afternoon on a terraza yarning to my friends. Life, for the most part, is good.

'The Sciontree' is my first novel though I have just finished the second one 'Lost Within' based on the same characters, set in winter in the village of Little Lostwithin.
