The Way It Was, Part 2
Most people "begin at the beginning" as a natural progression, but for many readers of Hour Detroit magazine, they "begin at the ending," for on the back page of each issue is a feature on Detroit history called The Way It Was. With each new issue, subscribers often flip first to the final page to look at a historical photograph, complemented by explanatory text.

This book, the second of a series to be published, is a compilation of The Way It Was, published in Hour Detroit magazine from 2005-11. The photos evoke a time and place that have passed, but fond memories are impossible to extinguish. In this new edition, you'll find such local landmarks as Old City Hall, the Guardian and Penobscot buildings, Awrey's, Tiger Stadium, Olympia Stadium, the Grande Ballroom, the Belle Isle Aquarium, the Mercury, Eastown, Madison, Shubert, and Punch and Judy theaters, as well as such notable Detroit figures as Berry Gordy Jr., George Romney, Coleman A. Young, Edsel Ford, Hank Greenberg, Charles Lindbergh, and Joe Louis. Even Carol Channing and Presidents Eisenhower and Reagan are captured in photos when they visited the city.

So turn back the clock and prepare for a nostalgic journey into Detroit's golden years.

About the Author

George Bulanda, managing editor of Hour Detroit and Detroit Home magazines, has been with Hour Media since its inception. Previously, he spent a dozen years at The Detroit News. Bulanda grew up on the city's north side, and his neighborhood memories include ice skating at Palmer Park, Saturday-afternoon movies at the Six Mile Theatre, walking to the Michigan State Fair, visits to the Lincoln Branch Library on Seven Mile, and Sanders treats at the Davison and Woodward location in Highland Park. These experiences helped fuel his interest in local history, which is a favorite pursuit, along with classical music, tennis, art, antiques, and reading.

Read an Excerpt

CHAPTER: 1935: Two of Detroit's sports giants share a light moment as boxer Joe Louis ("The Brown Bomber") makes a playful jab at Tigers first baseman Henry "Hammerin' Hank" Greenberg. The year 1935 was a golden one for the Tigers; under catcher/manager Mickey Cochrane, they won their first World Series, trouncing the Chicago Cubs, four games to two. Greenberg, who was named the American League's Most Valuable Player for that year, led the majors with 170 RBIs, and slammed 36 homers. Louis also had a stellar year, defeating such opponents as Primo Carnera (at Yankee Stadium), Max Baer, and Roscoe Toles. Further glory awaited him; from 1937-49, he reigned as World Heavyweight Champion.
