Pr. 1987. index. ref Darwin's continuing interest to general readers and to scholars is evidenced by the popular Beagle series on public television, the current controversy between creationists and ``traditional'' evolutionists, and the publication of a new edition of his works. The publishers claim this to be the first complete edition of all Darwin's published books. Vols. 1-10 appear now; volumes 11-29 are scheduled for 1988. Darwin authorities Paul Barrett and R. B. Freeman of Michigan State and London universities, respectively, edited the collection. A general introduction to the entire set is included in vol. 1, and a general index is planned for vol. 29. Individual volumes contain their own indexes. The text is based on the concept of a ``definitive'' edition. Vols. 1-9 contain all the Beagle writings; vol. 10, The Foundation of the `` Origin of the Species .'' The narrativeand most popularof the Beagle writings, contained in vol. 1, is reprinted from the edition established by Nora Barlow, Darwin's granddaughter, published by Cambridge in 1933. Vols. 2 and 3 contain Darwin's first book, originally published in 1839. Vols. 4-6 cover the mammals, birds, fishes, and amphibians studied on the voyage. The original Latin descriptions are given with translations. Some of these sections were prepared by contemporaries of Darwin, who are given credit. Vols. 7-9 contain the critical introductions written by Professor John Wesley Judd of the Royal School of Mines, London, and published in the Ward Lock, Minerva edition of 1890. Vol. 10 contains two essays written in 1842 and 1844, the former discovered in 1896 after Darwin's death and published with the 1844 essay in 1909. The set is sturdily bound in tasteful dark green cloth with good type and pleasingly wide margins. To have all Darwin's books currently available in a uniform and well-edited collection is a momentous publishing event.
