About the Author

Cathy Birkenstein is a lecturer in English at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She has published essays on writing in College English, and, with Gerald Graff in The Chronicle of Higher Education, Academe, and College Composition and Communication.

Gerald Graff, Emeritus Professor of English and Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago and 2008 President of the Modern Language Association of America, has had a major impact on teachers through such books as Professing Literature: An Institutional History, Beyond the Culture Wars: How Teaching the Conflicts Can Revitalize American Education, and Clueless in Academe: How Schooling Obscures the Life of the Mind.

Richard Bullock (Ph.D., University of Virginia) is professor emeritus of English at Wright State University, where he directed the writing programs and served as assistant chair of the English department. He’s the author of The Norton Field Guides to Writing, and his scholarship and teaching have focused on the teaching of writing in college and secondary school.

Michal Brody (Ph.D, University of Texas) is a linguist. She was a founding faculty member of Universidad de Oriente in Yucatán, Mexico. Her scholarly work centers on language pedagogy and politics in the United States and Mexico. She recently led a writing workshop for personnel of the secretaría de las Mujeres in Mérida, Yucatán. She’s co-author of Everyone’s an Author and What’s Language Got to Do with It? and editor of the Everyone’s an Author Tumblr.

Francine Weinberg (M.Ed, Teachers College, Columbia University) is a professional editor who has worked for more than thirty years on college and high school English textbooks. She’s the author of the handbook in The Norton Field Guide to Writing.
