This small, soft-covered reference book lists the TNM classification of malignant tumors organized according to primary site by the International Union Against Cancer. This is a fifth edition. The most accepted staging system for malignancies is the T (tumor), N (lymph nodes), M (metastases) classification, which often is important in developing effective therapeutic plans and generating relatively accurate estimation of prognosis. When all oncologists use the same staging classification, data from diverse study groups can be compared. All physicians and their trainees who work with cancer patients need to accurately stage the extent of malignancy present in the patients at the start of therapy. Memory of the stage is effective if one cancer site is primarily worked with, but a reference book is useful if many cancer sites are encountered. The morphologic features, including size and spread to local adjacent structures, leads to a numerical listing for tumor. Size and number of local lymph nodes involved leads to numerical listing for nodes, and presence or absence of distant metastases leads to numerical listing of metastases. For the first time, bloodborne serum marker concentrations have been used in the staging of testicular tumors and trophoblastic tumors. This handy little reference book should be at the fingertips of all physicians and healthcare givers working with cancer patients so that accurate staging assessments can be recorded for each new patient.

This small handbook contains the International Union Against Cancer (UICC) rules for classification and staging, which are identical to those appearing in the sixth edition of the (2002). There are some major modifications and additions which reflect new data on prognosis and new methods for assessing prognosis; substantial changes are marked by a bar on the left-hand side of the page.
