As a brand-new recipient of a lesbian sister (one of my older sisters just realized she is gay and came out last year), I was pretty enthusiastic about reading To Sappho, My Sister. However, my assumption that these were going to be trite little tales of "How My Gay Sister and I Came Out to Each Other" or "Growing Up With a Dyke Sibling" was shattered very early in the book with an almost painfully candid letter from Julie Dobkin to her lesbian sister, famed folk artist Alix Dobkin: "While I've spent most of my life feeling both unseen and unheard by you, I"ve wanted, at times almost desperately, for us to be close and confiding sisters.
