As is the usual with Pebble books from Capstone, large page or page and a third photographs on the right are paired with two or three short sentences on the left. A glossary at the back of the book defines some of the more difficult words. The concise wording gives the early reader an overview of what causes tornadoes and how to remain safe, while the final photographs show the devastation a tornado can do, ending with people helping people straighten up the mess. Capstone hopes the readers will come away with a better understanding of what causes these weather events and how to stay safe should a dangerous situation arise. Other books in the Earth in Action series are — Avalanches, Earthquakes, Hurricanes, Tsunamis, and Volcanoes. Enough violence to satisfy a bloodthirsty preshooler or to tantalize a first grader into wanting to know more.

Wendie's Wanderings

This is a perfect series to use with young children when teaching weather units. The large books feature one or two simply written sentences on one side of the page with a full page photograph opposite. While the facts are few and basic, the interest that these books will elicit will be great! A glossary will help equip the students with ways to describe what they see. The word count, according to the back page, will give the teacher an idea about the advisability of using these books as early readers. Early elementary students who disdain the picture book for the “made-up” story will love these “real” stories. The large photographs will give the children images to complement the information. Each book also gives the child hints on how to be safe if they should encounter the weather phenomena they see. Bibliography. Websites. Index. Recommended.

Every once in a while I get the urge to read something non-fiction to Ricky. Since he is so fascinated with tornadoes, I grabbed him this book at the library. This book is very brief, and talks about - in a high level for kids - what tornadoes are and how they form. There is one page that shows destruction, but it's not too bad. Just a bunch of wood and debris everywhere. Don't worry, there are no dead bodies!! K-Gr 2–These easy-to-read titles feature dramatic covers and interior images. Short chapters describe what the phenomenon is, how and where it happens, safety, and how scientists are learning more about the events and how to predict them. Each attractive spread boasts a full-page color photograph. Some show the aftermath of a disaster (and even, in Avalanches for example, the phenomenon as it happens), but there are also some diagrams showing physical mechanisms and maps highlighting commonly affected places. The left side of each spread provides a few sentences of large-print text, with short, clear explanations. These books will work well as starting points for early reports but since they do not mention any specific events, they will need to be supplemented by more detailed works for those seeking examples.
