About the Author

GIOVANNI DA LEGNANO (1320-1383) was born in Legnano, Italy, and was educated at the University of Bologna where he became a professor of canon law. A friend to Pope Urban V and Gregory XI, he also defended Pope Urban VI in the Western Schism. Compared to Aristotle by his contemporaries, Legnano's philosophy and writing have become the foundation of international law.
