About the Author

RICHARD GLAZAR (1920-1997) was a Czech Jew who lived through World War II, one of only a few survivors of the Treblinka death camp. He portrayed the horror of Treblinka to the world in his book Trap with a Green Fence.

Very few people survived the Treblinka death camp. Richard Glazar, one of the inmates who took part in the uprising of August 1943, wrote this account immediately after the end of the war, before his return to Prague. Because no publisher could be found for the Czech manuscript, it remained unpublished for more than four decades. In 1990 Glazar edited his original text, translated it into German for publication in Fischer Verlag's Jewish Life Series, and added a section on the intervening period of his life.
