About the Author

Kendra Menzies Kent, MS, RN, CENP, CCRN, CNRN, SCRN, TCRN, graduated from the University of Texas in Arlington in 1985 with her BSN. She successfully completed and graduated from Parkland Memorial Hospital's Critical Care and Trauma Internship. She has worked in the Surgery/Trauma, Thoracic and Neurosurgical ICU at Parkland Memorial Hospital as a staff nurse and nurse educator. Ms. Kent has been a manager on a trauma floor and the director of critical care at Zale Lipshy University Hospital in Dallas. She has her master's of nursing from Texas Women's University as a clinical nurse specialist (CNS) and has worked as a CNS in the surgical trauma ICU at Parkland Memorial Hospital. Ms. Kent moved to Florida and is currently the director of the Marcus Neuroscience Institute associated with Boca Raton Regional Hospital. Ms. Kent has presented seminars throughout the United States, Canada, and Oman. She has also published multiple chapters and books, including the books Adult CCRN® Certification Review, Trauma Certified Registered Nurse (TCRN®) Examination Review, and Neuroscience Certification Review for Nurses, published by Springer Publishing Company. Ms. Kent has been known to be engaging and supportive of nurses desiring certification. She receives emails from nurses who are excited that they have successfully passed their examinations.

Description: This rather unique publication is a collection of perforated flashcards formatted as a book. It comprehensively covers trauma questions on one side of each card, with answers on the back. The five areas reviewed are head and neck, trunk, extremities and wounds, special considerations, continuum of care, and professional issues.
Purpose: The purpose is implicit. This is an aid for nurses preparing to take the Trauma Certified Registered Nurse (TCRN) examination. The questions and answers are well written and provide an excellent tool for test preparation.
Audience: This book meets the needs of the intended audience of registered nurses. The first author is well known for TCRN review sessions across the United States, but the second author is not a nationally known nurse. There is no biographical or other information about the authors.
Features: The flashcards include significantly difficult questions requiring critical thinking skills on the part of nurses. The content is the best aspect of this publication. The rationales for the correct answers are well stated. The shortcomings include the absence of references, lack of an index, and missing author biographies.
Assessment: The content is of good quality, but I disagree with the packaging. It bothers me to fold, bend, and tear pages out of a book. It would make more sense to package the flashcards like note/file cards with tabs. Although there are many TCRN certification review books, I could only find this set of Q & A flashcards.
