Description: This book describes vision in several ways, including basic anatomy and eye diseases, and then relates how vision affects occupational performance. The previous edition of this book was published in 1998.
Purpose: According to the author, this second edition was written in response to the overwhelming positive response to the first edition and the keen interest in low vision. The second edition includes three additional chapters written by optometrists, occupational therapists, and other low vision professionals. It includes such topics as low vision evaluations, descriptions of professional disciplines whose practitioners work with low vision clients, and a chapter on how to start one's own low vision rehabilitation program. The objectives are worthy because of the amount of sensory information that is received through the visual system and the vital role vision plays in our independence. The book certainly meets the author's objectives. My interest in low vision is recent and this book gives a great overview.
Audience: The book is targeted for anyone who is interested in the topic of vision, but more specifically students, teachers, and other professionals who work with persons with low vision. It reads like a textbook, but is easy to follow. The author has done a good job of enlisting other professionals as contributing authors, including rehabilitation teachers, occupational therapists, optometrists, etc. The result is that the book is broad but concise.
Features: This book covers the visual system, going over basic anatomy, describing different deficits in the visual system, and discussing management of visual problems. It also covers visual aids, evaluation, and treatment of visual impairments and includes a basic overview of how to start a low vision clinic. Among the best features of the book are the illustrations, which help explain the text, but it would have improved the book to use some color instead of black and white. The new chapters are a good addition. The glossary is very helpful.
Assessment: I have a keen interest in the topic of low vision because a vision deficit can dramatically affect function. As a novice in the field of low vision, I found this book a tremendous help.
