Richmond-based synth punk outfit VCR is a far cry from new wave revivalists like the Killers and the Bravery, turning out their unique three-keyboard assault with aggression and optimism like no one else on this seven-song EP. At the helm, Chad Middleton rants more often than he croons, as evidenced by the quirky thump of "Rad," in which he urges all comers to "Just drop the act and let it go/Let yourself go." Bassist Steve Smith and drummer Christian Newby give the guitar-free band an undeniable force of rhythm that transforms songs like "Kings and Queens of Winter" from attitudinal Devo-esque novelties into brilliant and muscular club-worthy missiles. Scorching, infectious, and fun without being dumb, VCR are switched on. Rad indeed.
