Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) continues to be one of the greatest challenges to critical care practitioners and one of the greatest threats to the survival of our patients. Description: This is a multiauthored monograph on management of pneumonia in the patient receiving mechanical ventilation, a key critical care issue. This is volume 4 in the Perspectives On Critical Care Infectious Diseases series.
Purpose: Controversies focusing on diagnosis and management are reviewed from a multinational perspective.
Audience: The senior trainee or practitioner in critical care is an appropriate audience for this work. An international group of contributors provide a broad and balanced perspective.
Features: The book's 10 chapters are each approximately 15 pages in length and divided into subheadings. Presentations are clear and an adequate reference list with each presentation dates to within two years of publication. there are no Illustrations or photographs, but tables are used to summarize literature and data. The table of contents includes chapter title and authorship while the concluding index highlights key topics and microorganisms.
Assessment: This is a concise and clearly written discussion of ventilator-associated pneumonia. The reader is left without a conclusion on critical issues but can be reassured of a balanced review on three key issues: diagnosis, treatment strategy, and the effect of emergence of resistant pathogens. Even the data which argues the importance of ventilator-associated pneumonia as an independent clinical entity is critically reviewed.
