Overview
Only one work here is a real rarity, the third-act ballet composed by Verdi for the Brussels premiere of Nabucco, known in French by the work's original title of Nabuchodonosor, in 1848. Not all the tracks are original to this release; some come from an earlier recording of the 1865 version of Macbeth, with French text, by baritone Ludovic Tezier. Much of the album is given over to a 25-minute series of dances Verdi wrote for the Paris premiere of Il Trovatore in 1854. These have been recorded before (they turn up on one of Luciano Pavarotti's recordings of the opera) but aren't heard often. Tezier is a veteran baritone who seems to enjoy the chance to flex his Verdian chops in his native language, and Roberto Abbado (nephew of Claudio) is a strong Verdi conductor with the right mix of energy and precision in leading the Orchestra del Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini, and Coro del Teatro Regio di Parma. The long series of Il Trovatore dances are curiously flat; one searches in vain for a tune to leave the room humming, but serious Verdi lovers will want this album for the Nabucco ballet alone, and nothing on it is less than listenable. ~ James Manheim
