Overview

Previously known for making desert-like psychedelia as a solo artist and as one half of Barn Owl, guitarist Jon Porras shifted to glacial electronics in the vein of Loscil with his 2014 release Light Divide. Three years later, he released a cassette titled Tokonoma which was composed using the Yamaha DX7 synthesizer as well as synthetic voices and analog tapes, resulting in some of his most complex work to date. Voices of the Air continues in this direction, taking inspiration from John Chowning's work with FM synthesis. The result is a continuously flowing 31-minute work which organically progresses through layers of weightless drone and controlled washes of white noise. Alternately soothing and disorienting, the album's warm, glowing synths are gradually spiked with wavering, panned static. At times it approaches the sense of dread prevalent in Barn Owl's more doom metal-inspired moments, but there's always light that shines through. The entire album is simply an immaculately composed, engaging work which subtly alters the listener's consciousness. ~ Paul Simpson
