Overview
Based on Adrienne Shelly's 2007 indie film of the same name, Waitress is a stage musical about a Southern waitress stuck in an unhappy marriage. A comedy-drama with a book written by Shelly, it began previews on Broadway in March 2016, with its official opening in April. The show's composer and lyricist, Sara Bareilles, recorded her own versions of songs from the show for What's Inside: Songs from Waitress, released in November 2015. This original Broadway cast recording was recorded after the Broadway debut and released in June 2016. Produced by Bareilles and Neal Avron, the album stars Jessie Mueller, who workshopped Waitress fresh off her Tony win for Best Lead Actress in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. Other cast members include Drew Gehling, Kimiko Glenn, and Keala Settle, who solos on "I Didn't Plan It." With some lively and many wistful in tone, the elegant song set should appeal to admirers of Bareilles' adult alternative pop, while her way with a tune will charm many a theater fan. Highlights include the brief "Club Knocked Up," which takes on the harmony vocal stylings of the Chordettes, and the piano ballad "She Used to Be Mine." ~ Marcy Donelson
