Overview

The Warehouse Theater in Colorado Springs, CO was a railroad freight house back in the 1800s but is now the home of Scott O'Malley's Western Jubilee Recording Company. O'Malley has held small, intimate private concerts by his label's artists at the theater for some time now, and this 15-track representation of some of those shows is in essence a sampler for the Western Jubilee catalog, which specializes in folk, country and all things cowboy, including spoken word and poetry. Intimate as a comfy living room, the theater is perfect for acoustic artists like Norman and Nancy Blake, Peter Rowan, Don Edwards, Bryan Bowers and Skip Gorman, all of whom, like the other artists included here, know full well what to do when given this kind of space to work in. Everything feels as easy as breathing, from the casual song introductions to the crisp instrumentals that might easily find themselves diffused in a larger festival setting, and although these tracks were recorded over several shows held between 1996 and 2006, it all still manages to sound like it emerged from a single session. Everything fits, although a couple cuts do stand out a bit, including Jimmy Ibbotson's banjo-led "Santa Rosa" and Skip Gorman's fiddle medley ("Jack of Diamonds/Black Mountain Blues") as well as Bryan Bowers' delightful "Dog," which is quite literally a shaggy dog story. Again, Warehouse Tracks also functions as a sampler of the kinds of artists O'Malley records on his imprint, so if you like this intimate little set, there's plenty more Western Jubilee material to seek out and discover. ~ Steve Leggett
