We, the Learners
Why is it time for We, the Learners?
Anxiety about our society. Civic nervousness. Concerns about the human community at the local, state, national, and even international levels. In 2025, feelings of distress and disturbance in these areas seem to be widespread. People who read, think, listen, and pay attention to what is happening in societies around the world-but especially in the United States-have been experiencing feelings of disquiet, even helplessness, in the face of growing nationalism, authoritarianism, and intolerance in social and public life. This book provides a response to these trends, in the form of both a diagnosis for our current maladies, and a possible course forward. We, the Learners is an explanation of who we are as people, how we got to our current state of affairs, and an affirmative way to move forward in human community so that all of us are both acting and regarded as valuable contributors to an uplifting society.
Sketching the philosophical and brain-based determinants of how we think, act, and organize ourselves, We, the Learners offers a social organization, in the form of a massively re-designed Constitution, that aims at the heart of who human beings are: organisms that are born to learn.
If you are one of the thinking, reading, and attentive participants in society who feels the 21st-century anxiety about our human future, you need to read this book. We, the Learners author William Brazier calls us to think and act, knowing that no human problem gets addressed without honest discussion and a commitment to thoughtful action. Regarding the ideas in this book and the vision for the future he offers, Brazier recognizes that not everyone will agree with the perspectives and recommendations presented here, but advocates them as part of an important social conversation we must have. In publishing this work, he offers these words to all of us: Here's my idea. Where's yours?
