What About Barnum? by Joss Landry

To Millicent Brewer, Barnum may as well be Poseidon when he walks out of a rip current’s swell in the Pacific Ocean to save her five-year-old son from drowning. Jonah is her whole world. However, Millie’s divorce taught her to avoid tall, gorgeous men—badasses her sister Denny calls them. And the glow in Barnum’s eyes stirs her. No. Not merely gratitude. More like an emotional alarm prompting her to remain on her guard.

Trouble emerges in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico with two murders at their hotel. To prevent retribution from the Jalisco Drug Cartel, Barnum fetches Millie, Denny, and Jonah in the middle of the night to board his yacht.

One evening while walking on the beach, Barnum gathers Millie in his arms in a passionate kiss that turns black clouds into white linen, and Millie senses the two of them floating far above the ground. While the man provides for all their needs with charm and kindness, through unfathomable occurrences, Millie considers Barnum might not be human.

The title was perfect. I was always wondering “What about Barnham” throughout the entire story. Millie Brewer combined her business trip to Mexico with a vacation and took her young son and sister along. Things start to go downhill for her when her son was swept out to sea. But miraculously, a man saved him. Then her boss’s ex-wife was murdered and he was a suspect. Add a Mexican Drug Cartel and you have quite an exciting story. Who was Barnham, the man who saved Millie’s son? Was he a CIA agent or a mystical being, or both? Whoever he was, there was a magnetic attraction between him and Millie. But with reincarnation involved, this was not a typical romance. I really liked the characters in this book, especially Barnham, Millie, and Jonah. I also really liked the second half of the story which was more about Barnham as well as Millie. I found the first half hard to follow though. I couldn’t understand what was happening with the Cartels and found the Mexican names confusing. As requested by the author, I have given my honest review and rated this book 3.5 stars.

Title: What about Barnum - Binary Bounty Book 1 Author: Joss Landry Publisher: Book Beatles Publishing Ltd Published: 7-10-2017 Pages: 284 Genre: Mystery & Thrillers Sub-Genre: Suspense, Relationships, Fiction, Clean & Wholesome, Science Fiction, Fantasy, Romance, ISBN: 97809959586893 ASIN: B073V6PQ9W Reviewed For NetGalley and Joss Landry Reviewer: DelAnne Rating: 5 Stars Millicent "Millie" Brewer has not had the best of luck in her life choices. With her recent divorce, career change and a father who constantly ridicules her it is a surprise she can choose what to have for breakfast in the morning. While in Mexico for a training conference accompanied by her five year old son, Jonah, and younger sister Denny she meet Barnum when he save Jonah from drowning. Later she meets him at a local bar and dance spot and he convinces her she is mistaken. Then her boss's ex is found murdered in his hotel room and she is drawn into the investigation as a suspect. When an attempt is made on her life Barnum steps in an whisks her, Denny and their mother to safety in his home. As feelings grow between them so do the questions about Barnum. Can she learn to accept the truth about Barnum or will past mistakes and fears tear them apart forever? Within moment of downloading the book I decided to skim it to see what it is about. Big mistake, I couldn't stop next thing I knew an hour and half had passed and I was on the last page. I wanted more. About the time I thought I had everything figured out another curve was thrown into the works and my mind was off and running. Millie and the other characters were well developed individuals that melded well together. The scenes flowed so smoothly that you keep reading waiting to see what will happen next. I have visited Mexico often and could easily envision the scenes and imagined myself in the missed of the action. Readers will devour "What about Barnum" and be left hungry for more. This is a story that will desired by mystery and suspense lovers alike. Clean language is a definite plus. I hope others are lucky enough to discover this talented writer's latest new series. I found no faults with this book. My rating of "What about Barnum" is 5 out of 5 stars.

Captivating to the End. I love when a story keeps me rooted to the pages as they fly by. The only problem with this is the story finishes all too quickly. I just can’t wait for the second installment of The Binary Bounty. Finishing such a story always leaves me wanting more. In this story, Millie Brewer, a professor with tenure at Berkeley California, goes to Mexico with her sister and her son to attend a convention for an online Marketing Company. She has had some success with the project she just began and is helping Jed Swayzee succeed while collecting some award as well. Recently divorced from a man who could not help chasing the ladies, a badass as her sister Denny calls him, she knows better than to get romantically involved with Jed, another badass of sorts. Her life revolves around her five-year-old son, Jonah now. However, when a mysterious man walks out of the wave with her son in his arms, rescuing him from a riptide current, she cries as she thanks him and admits she would have fished her son out or died trying. Barnum’s charm seizes her immediately, and while Millie is more than grateful, she believes he’s just another one of those badasses, apt to make a woman lose her head. Several developments occur, a couple of murders at the hotel, and Millie becomes implicated thanks to Jed’s panic and one policeman’s ignorance. Rather than spoil this story for you, I will tell you that I enjoyed every page of this book, and I strongly recommend the read to whoever loves romance, and sci-fi. You will not be disappointed.
