Overview

Return to New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth Hoyt's signature drama and intrigue, where two enemies will discover if their marriage of convenience can survive -- 'til death do they part.

Ambitious, sly, and lethally intelligent, Gideon Hawthorne has spent his life clawing his way up from the gutter. For the last ten years, he's acted as the Duke of Windemere's fixer, performing the duke's dirty work without question. Now Gideon's ready to quit the duke's service and work solely for himself. But Windermere tempts Gideon with an irresistible offer: one last task for Messalina Greycourt's hand in marriage.

Witty, vivacious Messalina Greycourt has her pick of suitors, so when her uncle demands Messalina marry Mr. Hawthorne, she is appalled. But Gideon offers her a devil's bargain of his own: protection and freedom in exchange for a true marriage. Messalina feigns agreement and plots to escape their deal. Only the more time she spends with Gideon, the more her fierce, loyal husband arouses her affections. But will Gideon's final deed for Windemere destroy the love growing between them?

Editorial Reviews

DECEMBER 2020 - AudioFile

Narrator Ashford McNab masterfully draws the listener into this historical romance set in England in the 1700s. Messalina Greycourt has been given in marriage to Gideon Hawthorne, who is her sinister uncle, the Duke of Windemere’s, fixer. McNab gives distinct voices to each of the characters. Listeners can hear the evil in the Duke. Gideon has literally fought his way up from the gutter and is looking forward to his marriage to solidify his place in society. The listener can picture Sam, the boy in Gideon’s employ, as he cares for Messalina’s puppy, Daisy. McNab brings out the agony in Gideon's voice while bringing the audience to tears at learning of the horror of his past. Listeners will root for him and Messalina. When Gideon Hawthorne, fixer for the notorious Duke of Windemere, is offered the hand of the woman he's long pined for, as payment for killing that woman's brother, Gideon takes the deal. And while Lady Messalina Greycourt is aghast when she learns about the marriage deal her uncle has made, she must accept it to protect her younger sister. As long as Messalina acts the part and helps Gideon gain a place in society, he'll agree to leave her alone … unless she asks for him. Messalina agrees, thinking she'll never want a thing from her husband and not knowing he's meant to kill her brother; but soon she finds she's falling for him. Gideon too realizes he is falling in love with his wife and hopes he can achieve his goals without having to risk everything. Ashford McNab's measured, yet lush narration will enthrall readers searching for an epic historical romance escape. VERDICT Gideon is a highly competent hero who more than meets his match in heroine Messalina, and McNab brings their verbal sparring and chemistry to life.—Elizabeth Gabriel, Milwaukee P.L.
