Meet Mary Ann Winkowski. She is just like you. She is a married mother of two grown daughters. She lives in a suburban town in Ohio. She goes to church every Sunday.

And she sees and talks to ghosts.

Mary Ann's grandmother noticed her unusual ability when she was practically a baby. By the time Mary Ann was four years old, she was attending neighborhood funerals to broker communication between those who had died and their living loved ones. Word of her extraordinary abilities spread, and Mary Ann was soon accompanying her grandmother on "social calls," visits where Mary Ann would confront earthbound spirits who were sharing homes with the living. This ability stayed with Mary Ann through her adolescence into adulthood, and the stay-at-home mom eventually had a side business: paranormal consultant.

In this remarkable book, Mary Ann tells her incredible story. She talks about the difference between earthbound spirits and those who have crossed over; she tells you why spirits remain on the earthly plane and how long they have before their "White Light' disappears; she shares her most intriguing and infamous tales about the spirits she has encountered. And she divulges how to determine whether your house or your family is haunted—and what to do if there is a ghost around you.

Full of no-nonsense advice, amazing anecdotes, and practical tips for navigating a paranormal phenomenon that is at once unbelievable and awe-inspiring, WHEN GHOSTS SPEAK is a must-read for any person who has ever heard something go bump in the night.

I do not usually take the time to write reviews but I feel compelled to write one for this book. My husband purchased this book for me and I just never sat down to read it until he picked it up and I noticed that he could not put it down (he is not much of a reader, though I am). My curiosity got the better of me and I picked up the book and like him, could not put it down. Mary Ann Winkowski is the person for whom the TV show Ghost Whisperer is based. I have never watched the show. I have, unfortunately, had several close friends and family members die untimely deaths. While I do not believe that I have a ghost in my house, I have experienced events surrounding those deaths that have made me wonder if their spirits have made a visit and I have had close friends tell me stories of events surrounding a love ones death that have made me wonder if they have had a visit from a ghost. Mary Ann wrote this book not to create a dramatic novel, but to tell you what it is like when someone dies and what happens before or if they do not cross over. She is quick to mention that her life is not the dramatic life of the Ghost Whisperer, but if you want to know what REALLY happens between the time someone dies and the time someone crosses over, then you should read this book or if you have strange things occurring in your house and have the slightest suspicion of a ghost, then you MUST read this book. THERE ARE ANSWERS. I am a skeptical attorney, but I could not get enough of her personal experiences and could have easily read another book with a couple hundred more pages of her personal experiences. Events surrounding my father's death now make sense. Events surrounding my best friend's husband's untimely death now make sense. Read the book and see for yourself. Don't expect to be spoon fed a lot of hype and drama. This book is chock full of real world experiences and I am convinced, Mary Ann is the real deal.

I am sorry but this book was not all that I have hoped for and what it was hyped up to be. Each chapter and page was the same thing over and over and over again and she repeated herself A LOT in this book. I also did not like how she would lie or use deceict to make an earthbound cross over. I understand you do try and an exception would be if you were trying to get an evil earthbound to cross over but I felt it wasn't right to lie to others. She made no qualms about it and how she would with hold information or not speak up if someone would need that info. I think her logic is don't ask don't tell but if she "really" had this gift, she wouldn't do that. I do not like how she is selling quince seeds that are overly priced. Yet, she gets them from her relatives but does not know how they bless them. C'mon, if you are selling them on your online store, you better know how or IF they are really blessed or even if this is indeed done. I feel this is a scam to get money. Also, the pictures she has in her book was already published in another ghost hunter book by another author, they were not hers! I am sure she is a nice person, but the book was reiterated way too much and everything could have been summed up in 1 chapter!

Mary Ann Winkowski writes in a clear, practical manner about her dialogue with "earthbound" spirits some of whom are stuck here and others trying to resolve their unfinished business with the living. If you have doubts or questions about the spirit world, When Ghosts Speak is a terrific explanation of what happens when people(and animals) die, what motivates some spirits to stick around, and advice on how to avoid unwanted ghostly guests. A great account of Ms Winkowski's experiences which serve as the basis for the "Ghost Whisperer" program.

I could not put this book down! I have read many books on the paranormal and this is one of the best. It is very informative and interesting. A must read for anyone interested in the paranormal or supernatural.

I went to one of her book signings and she was rude and very annoyed at all the people standing in line waiting her to sign her book. Her husband was just as rude and you could tell by their actions (including eye rolling) that they did not want to be there. What her and her husband fail to realize is that if it wasn't for people like us, her fans, she wouldn't have made the money that she did. Very disappointed in the book being she rehashes the same thing in each chapter and found her not to be creditable. I am no longer a fan of hers along with their junk that they sell too which is useless!

I have always been a lover and a believer in the spiritual world.Ever since i was little and I could probably blame that on my father who pretty much taught me everything that I know. But when I was younger, growing up in my Grandmother's 1912 home there were some pretty strange things that had happened there that had never been explained. So that had a lot to with my obsession of everything paranormal.I really enjoyed reading this book because it gives you a different view from someone who has had to live all of her life 'seeing dead people'. That is just fascinating and to have someone in her life that fostered and nurtured her 'specialty'. She tells the tales of some of her incredible encounters with ghosts and even goes as far to have chapters devoted to what to do if you think you're being haunted. What to do to prevent from bringing a ghost home with you. It's amazing and she came up with a great deal of stuff that I had read from other authors who deal with ghosts. This book was truly a fantastic read. If you love the 'based on a true story' type stuff than this is the book for you. Even if your a skeptic and I'm sure there are a lot of you out there, still why not keep your mind open to just the possibilty.

I know there are a lot of people who don't believe in ghosts or any other types of paranormal phenomena, but I grew up in a very old house in which there were often strange occurences that could not be logically explained away. This book is a "must read" for any person who is interested in the supernatural or paranormal. The author is the consultant for the CBS series "Ghost Whisperer" and was the inspiration for the main character, Melinda Gordon. If you're not sure about the book, take a look at the show and then revisit the idea. Repeat episodes can be found on Comcast channel 38 (ION network), Monday thru Thursday at 6:00 and 7:00 p.m. (and 8:00 p.m. on Wednesdays)

If the reader is already a believer, this book will be quite a treat. If the reader is a die hard skeptic, the book will be put down before the first fifty pages have been turned. Few who've made up their minds about ghosts and afterlife are going to be swayed to change their opinion. But that does not seem to be an objective of this book, nor perhaps should it be.What the book affords is a long series of anecdotes, told in an amusing style, about a life extraordinary. Mary Ann has been providing a service, at first to her very local community, and then to a larger community (now extending internationally) since she was still a child.Having been raised in a family environment that was apparently largely open to the Bigger Possibilities, she seems to have lived something of the charmed life indeed. For those who follow the "Ghost Whisperer" television show, some of the stories in this book will be especially interesting. While I do not necessarily approve of Mary Ann's "All Ghost Must Go!" philosophy (she has a seriously effective bag of tactical tricks she employs to encourage, cajole, or manipulate a spirit to "cross over", whether they want to or not), I certainly think her heart is in the right place. No John Edward "that's not how it works!" crap here, just some fascinating stories, told in a very matter of fact way, as your Aunt Mary might tell you over a cup of tea.Charming.

Biography of Mary Ann Winkowski, consultant to the CBS TV show "Ghost Whisperer, Mary Ann recounts her life of communicating with the dead. Fascinating, offbeat biography.

A great read that in some ways helps to demystify the topic on ghosts and hauntings in general. After reading the book it helped to clarify a lot of Hollywood misinformation about the topic. I wish that she would write more about the negative aspects of hauntings and spend a little more time on the difrentiation of good and negative spirits. This has been one of the best books on the topic and is worth the read.

I'm not a big fan of "New Age" stuff, but this book was truly amazing and believable. Regardless of your religious affiliation, this book actually gave me comfort in many respects and gave me hope about the hereinafter. Very entertaining, regardless of whether you buy into the concept of spirits.
