I picked up this book two weeks before my total hip replacement surgery. Being a healthy 62 year old, needing this surgery due to an accident, I suddenly was facing things that I had previously associated with ‘old age’. This book couldn’t have come at a better time for me and I know that my future will be different because of it. Joy Loverde, in her groundbreaking book, “Who Will Take Care of Me When I’m Old” has practical, skillful and the necessary steps to help us with the inevitable. Cheeky at times, with recommended lists of songs, TV shows, YouTube videos and Ted Talks that illustrate the chapter headings, her media sources touch our aging baby boomer brains in ways that mere words cannot. The book begins with ‘Meet Your Future Self’ (cue ‘My Way’ performed by Frank Sinatra - see what I mean about media reference...you KNOW what’s ahead). Ms. Loverde doesn’t just talk esoteric gobbledegook, she gives us real tools and instructions on how to plan and visualize our future. If you follow her instructions I promise that you will be planful about your future. One of the tools I like best in this book are the worksheets in each chapter. Questions are asked that directly go to the topic at hand, some of them uncomfortable...which is exactly why they need to be asked. Do your work and you will be rewarded. My mother says that ‘aging is not for sissies’ and the older I get, the wiser she is. This book illustrates many ways to age successfully. The more you get involved, the better it is for you. Unlike taxes and politics, aging/death isn’t something that shouldn’t be discussed at the dining room table. The more you think about it, plan for it and actively live it, the higher the quality aging you will have. This is a book that should be read by everyone, whether alone or in a relationship, and is a loving gift to any of your friends. Thank you, Joy Loverde, for accumulating all the resources and writing this book.
I had Joy Loverde as a guest on an audio interview series I did last year, and she was one of my most popular subject matter experts. Her books are as conversational and friendly as she is, and just reading her sage advice is enough to make the logistics of aging seem less daunting. As with her “Complete Book of Eldercare,” Joy empowers readers with practical, workable advice for medical, housing, financial and technology decisions. She provides easy tools including checklists and spreadsheets for planning and tracking. She instills a sense of calm and confidence. This is a must-read for anyone over 40!
As a financial advisor, this tool has proved priceless to our clients! Joy's checklists, worksheets and resource lists are concisely written and up to date. Joy has such knowledge, passion and insight into the elder demographic and the challenges, opportunities and resources available to those aging, and those who love them. I especially enjoyed the non-financial "personal readiness" section. Most clients, and rightfully so, are focused on their retirement savings. But, Joy provides fresh ideas and challenging insights to help clients define their life goals. This is where the magic happens! Joy's Complete Eldercare Planner is another go-to book!
A day does not go by that I do not worry about what is going to happen to me the older I get and start needing some kind of care and attention. This book not only has the answers I was looking for, but it also gave me a new and more positive perspective about old age in general. I also love the worksheets in this book.
Joy Loverde writes a timeless treasure on a topic that is not to often talked about in family circles, aging. While we cannot predict the future, we can create a plan that will help ease some of the trials and tribulations that aging brings to each of us. Ms. Loverde's book provides her readers with terrific planning tools which helps guide us through the aging process; there are no aging issues left speculate in this book! I specifically like the objectives at the beginning of each chapter, along with the tremendous amount of resources provided in this book; well done! While I have yet to come across anyone who has Caregiving on their bucket list of things they plan to do, or better yet, need as we age, Ms. Loverde's book is the guide that will help each one of us plan for the unexpected, while ensuring our desire to age as happy and healthy as time allows.
