Overview

Conventional wisdom dictates that a film about Frankie Lymon's death and his three feuding widows would have at least one song performed by Lymon on the soundtrack. Conventional wisdom would be wrong. Why Do Fools Fall in Love doesn't have a single Lymon performance on it, even if its title track is covered by Gina Thompson. Instead, compilers Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott, Timbaland, Sylvia Rhone and Merlin Bobb have assembled an album designed to appeal to contemporary urban and soul artists, baiting it with one bonus oldie from Little Richard. It may not make for a faithful soundtrack to a movie largely set in the '50s, but it makes for a fairly entertaining record, thanks to the sharp musical ears of Elliott and Timbaland. Certainly, a few of the tracks fall flat, but there are enough great moments -- Lil' Mo's "5 Minutes," Elliott and Busta Rhymes' "Get Contact," and the Elliott and Scary Spice duet "I Want You Back" -- to make it a first-rate urban contemporary and hip-hop soundtrack. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
