Unfortunately, this disquieting Wight breaks all the ancient agreements as it enthralls humans, animals, and cryptids alike.

Ahnjii's closest friend, Tyler, could end up the Wight's next thrall. That, could be the Wight's last mistake.

The Khimmer Chronicles is a contemporary, urban fantasy set on a mysterious Earth where Fae, Nedjir, shifters, and other cryptids hide in plain sight. Book one of the series is a dangerous hunt that forces Ahnjii to use her Nightarmor on Earth.

An otherworldly woman who lands on Earth must deal with hidden dangers on her adoptive planet in Davis’ modern fantasy novel.

Ahnjii has been trained by monks to become an assassin on her home world of Duruce. But she falls through an interplanetary “gate” and finds herself in Slovenia, where she meets visiting American siblings Tyler and Deanna.Aided by Khimmer, the controlling consciousness of her adaptive “Nightarmor,” Ahnjii attempts to make the transition to Earthly life. Ahnjii is a human lie detector, and her “truthsense” helps her land a job with a lawyer.This ability also allows her to see cryptids, such as Fae and and Nedjir,living among the humans. Her orderly new life gets derailed when Deanna’s boyfriend, John, goes missing and she feels obligated to help locate him. She meets Shailagh, a High Fae, who is hunting for an ancient wight who’s turning humans into thralls. Fearing the wight has taken John, Ahnjii throws in with Shailagh; the fact that there’s a mutual heat between them plays a role in that decision (“The red hair, along with an inviting smile, sparked an immediate attraction”). Having to protect Tyler, who forces their way into the mission, requires Ahnjii to push her abilities to the fullest. The author does an admirable job of table-setting in this first book of his fantasy series. He introduces a large roster of characters, although only Ahnjii, Shailagh, and Tyler feature prominently in this installment. The rest of the cast isn’t very well-developed yet; hopefully, Davis will rectify this in future volumes. Readers hit the ground running as the narrative establishes Ahnjii’s backstory through a series of flashbacks (it feels authentic that this well-honed warrior has lost her fighting edge as a result of becoming an Earthling). She’s still learning what Nightarmor can, and can’t, do for her.The pace of Davis’ narrative is brisk—until it suddenly isn’t. Readers suffer through the same lengthy slog as Ahnjii, Tyler, and Shailagh as they wade through the woods seeking the wight. But a satisfying conclusion still leaves many loose ends to tie up in the future.

A plucky protagonist who’s still finding her way propels this fantasy adventure.
