Description: This handbook addresses a broad range of medical and musculoskeletal problems encountered during snow and ice-based activities. Relevant topics in cardiac physiology, pulmonary pathophysiology, cold injuries, and doping are also covered.
Purpose: The book is intended to help clinicians diagnose and treat numerous conditions experienced by winter sports athletes. Helpful background, historical, and epidemiological information about the individual sports is included. The book integrates medical and orthopedic issues well. Two well-referenced sections address relevant cardiac and pulmonary considerations. The editors have attempted to capture the breadth of winter activities and generally succeed.
Audience: The handbook is intended for physicians, physical therapists, and athletic trainers who work with athletes participating in winter sports. The authors also hope that coaches and athletes may benefit from the book, but the concise, outline-based format will likely challenge nonclinicians. The authors include several leaders in the field from medical and surgical disciplines.
Features: The book contains 15 chapters that are primarily devoted to individual sports. Selected chapters also address cardiac physiology, pulmonary pathophysiology, cold-induced injuries, and biochemical doping. A quick reference guide at the beginning of the book lists prominent medical and musculoskeletal issues in a brief, tabular format. An appendix listing selected dosages for corticosteroid and anesthetic injections is also included. Illustrations, figures, and images are of average quality and sparingly used. Some sections are more completely referenced than others, and certain winter sports such as mountaineering and climbing have been omitted.
Assessment: This is a welcome addition to the field of sports medicine and nicely covers many issues related to winter sports. The up-to-date and practical book will be especially useful for those who treat winter athletes. Busy clinicians will find the expanded outline format helpful, but may need to consult additional sources for more detailed information.
