About the Author

Cathy Nutbrown is President of Early Education and Professor of Education in the School of Education at the University of Sheffield. Her research over the last 30 years, has focussed on young children’s learning and work with parents to support young children’s literacy development. She won an ESRC Award for Research with Outstanding Impact on Society and a Nursery World Lifetime Achievement Award. She is author of over 150 publications including Early Literacy Work with Families (with Hannon and Morgan, Sage, 2005), Early Childhood Educational Research (Sage, 2019), and Home Learning Environments for Young Children (with Clough, Davies and Hannon, Sage, 2022).

Ann Clare began her career as a secondary school English teacher. It was after having her three children, Felicity, Edward and Hannah, that she became the head of a small village private nursery school at the same time as studying for her Master’s degree. Ann followed this by becoming an Early Years Consultant working for two North West local authorities.

A chance conversation with Professor Cathy Nutbrown encouraged her to further her studies at the University of Sheffield where she graduated with her Ph D, researching babies and young children under three.

This research led Ann on to write her first book, Creating a Learning Environment for Babies and Toddlers in 2012 and to co-author a second edition of Working with Babies and Toddlers with Jools Page and Cathy Nutbrown in 2013.

The arrival of Ann’s two grandchildren, Oscar and Lottie, further inspired her to write this new book focusing on interaction and communication in the early years. Ann is now enjoying a happy retirement which is filled with her continued work with the University of Sheffield, making bread and visiting her gorgeous grandchildren in Germany.
