About the Author

Bruce J. Fried, PhD, is an associate professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management in the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he served as director of master’s degree programs for more than 20 years. Dr. Fried teaches courses in human resources management, international and comparative health systems, and globalization and health. He has written numerous journal articles, books and book chapters, commentaries, and book reviews and was coeditor of World Health Systems: Challenges and Perspectives, second edition (Health Administration Press, 2012). His research interests include the impact of improvement teams and culture on quality in healthcare settings, the healthcare workforce, mental health services, and global health. Dr. Fried has conducted workshops and management training courses in Eastern Europe, Asia, Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, and the Caribbean. He received his master’s degree from the University of Chicago and his doctorate from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Description: In presenting an overview of healthcare systems with a global perspective, this book profiles 25 countries to provide context for healthcare system analyses.
Purpose: The purpose is to present information/factors that impact healthcare systems and ultimately population health. The understanding of healthcare reformation is used as a background for this discussion in order to examine the context of health and health systems.
Audience: The audience is not clearly defined, but there are resources for instructors to use with their students. Therefore, the target audience appears to be students in health policy, systems, and health professional programs.
Features: The book spans general topics ranging from the epidemiology of health issues to specific factors such as financing and measuring healthcare outcomes. The 25 countries that are profiled include both low and high income, demonstrating the various influences on healthcare systems such as political, social, regulatory, and workforce. According to the preface, there is an instructor supplement that includes a sample course syllabus, sample assignments, resources, and PowerPoints.
Assessment: There are many books on healthcare systems, but few that have country-specific examples. In this much-needed second edition (the previous one was published in 2002), the central issues such as disease trends and determinants of health as well as the economics of healthcare systems have been expanded. The Millennium Development Goals have been included to provide a framework for health trends, measures, and healthcare reform. This book provides a good global context for healthcare systems.
