The highly anticipated new thriller from the New York Times bestselling author of The Perfect Marriage and One of Us Is Dead

You've opened up your house and your heart to a total stranger ... What could possibly go wrong?

Grace Evans, an overworked New Yorker looking for a total escape from her busy life, books an Airbnb on a ranch in the middle of Wyoming. When she arrives at the idyllic getaway, she's pleased to find that the owner is a handsome man by the name of Calvin Wells-and he's eager to introduce her to his easygoing way of life. But there are things Grace discovers that she's not too pleased about: A lack of cell phone service. A missing woman. And a feeling that something isn't right with the ranch.

Despite her uneasiness, the two bond and start to fall for one another. However, as her departure date nears, things change for the worse. What began as a playful romance soon turns into a complicated web of lies. Grace grows wary of Calvin as his infatuation for her seems to have morphed to obsession. Calvin fears that Grace is hiding something from him-including her reason for staying at his ranch to begin with. Vacation flings typically end in heartbreak, but for Grace and Calvin, it'll be far more destructive.

Publishers Weekly

New Yorker Grace Evans, one narrator of this intriguing thriller from Rose (One of Us Is Dead), books a getaway at a remote ranch near DuBois, Wyo., to escape her high-powered banking career and relax. The other narrator is the ranch’s proprietor, Calvin Wells, who promises to keep her safe after she tells him on arrival that she had a run-in with a creepy gas station attendant en route. The good news: plenty of outdoor activities and breathtaking scenery; the bad news: little to no phone reception and no internet. Though Grace is a bit apprehensive, she shrugs it off, determined to disconnect from technology. But then her car starts acting up, folks in DuBois aren’t exactly friendly (including Calvin’s friends and family), and then the police show up looking for a young woman who was supposed to be the ranch’s most recent guest. Calvin says she never showed, and Grace believes him; the two become increasingly entangled as things go awry. A sinister undercurrent runs throughout, and while the reader is privy to each narrator’s thoughts, there are a few land mines buried along the way to the surprise ending. Rose should win new fans with this one. Agent: Sandy Lu, Book Wyrm Literary. (Apr.)Correction: An earlier version of this review misstated the name of the character Grace Evans.

Library Journal

Every year, Grace leaves New York City to find a random vacation spot. This year, it is an Airbnb ranch in middle-of-nowhere Wyoming. She soon finds that it forgoes small-town charm, with dead animals, hostile townspeople, and creeps galore. There's no Wi-Fi, no cell service, and soon after arriving, no working car. Fortunately, the ranch also includes handsome host Calvin, who soon becomes her eager, possibly obsessed, lover. In Grace, he sees another chance at love, if only he could keep her there forever. The underlying tension is the true strength, present and palpable from beginning to end. However, it is steady to a fault, with only a few short, odd bursts of terror that feel more out of place than anything. Readers may forget it is a thriller altogether and may be turned off by overly repetitive descriptions. Occasional philosophic ponderings make for beautiful quotes but are somewhat random and can work against the cohesiveness of the story. The characters are never fleshed out, lessening the impact of the final twist. VERDICT For diehard fans of Rose's (One of Us Is Dead) novels and fans of romantic thrillers with not so many thrills.—Elisha Sheffer

Andrew Eiden and Andi Arndt portray the two main characters in this romantic suspense, which will keep listeners guessing. Looking for a vacation spot, Grace tossed a dart at a map and landed on an Airbnb ranch in Wyoming. Once there, she discovers there's a mystery about the ranch owner, Calvin, who clearly is attracted to Grace. And all Grace was looking for was some peace and quiet! A handful of minor characters are well portrayed, including Calvin's brother; a drunken, slurring lodger; and several female friends. The narration duo stays consistent, painting a vivid picture of who we think the characters are. M.B. © AudioFile 2023, Portland, Maine

Kirkus Reviews

Will-they, won’t-they turns into something altogether darker: Who is after whom?

Grace Evans is a bit of a mystery, even to herself. She’s never been able to explain her annual tradition of throwing a dart at a U.S. map and traveling wherever it lands. Maybe her goal is to escape from her life in New York, where she’s in control too much of the time. This year, her tradition sends her to a ranch in Wyoming with an Airbnb and, she discovers on her arrival, hot host Calvin Wells. It all seems like good luck. Calvin thinks having Grace as his guest is pretty lucky too, as his alternating point-of-view chapters show him getting stuck on his guest as her time with him passes. Grace and Calvin spend bucolic days together riding horses, grocery shopping, and getting to know each other in what turns out to be their own little slice of paradise. But how well can you really know someone? wonders Grace, particularly as a local police officer keeps coming to the door asking about a girl who had booked Calvin’s Airbnb and then vanished without a trace. She never showed up, Calvin claims, and Grace wants to believe him even as she grows suspicious. Mysterious animal deaths, haunting dreams, and vague warnings from local townsfolk have Grace wondering if she’s safe staying with Calvin, but checking her car shows that it needs repairs, so she may not be able to get away even if she tries. In the face of Grace’s growing concern, Calvin promises that everything’s fine, and it is for a long time, until it isn’t.

All buildup with a late-coming release.
